Default Some British Combatives

Saw this on another site:--

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZK6Bss3pIo

By a guy called Bob Spour. Ex SF I believe, and mainly into Thai Boxing. But his CQB isn't like any Thai Boxing I've ever seen.

Only a very brief film, but what do you all think?

I've always liked the idea of setting up throws/take downs with strikes; I saw a lot of that in kung fu's tiger techniques. I'm not completely sold on the ways he was taking them down though; it looks like some of his throws rely a lot on the guy being badly stunned by the strikes- then again there's a big difference between watching a clip and getting a chance to play with the technique in person so I don't want to jump to conclusions. Those elbow strikes look nasty as hell though.

I see your point. I've always been a little confused in the idea of stunning someone so that you could throw them. Why not just beat them senseless until they fall over all by themselves, in a manner that means they are less likely to get up?

Still, I ain't going up against Bob Spour.

In Mongolian wrestling the throws are more devestating than the strikes. You strike your opponent to stun him them throw him down so hard it breaks his bones, hips, ribs, ect. Judo uses similar principals as well. Strikes can be deflected and give your opponent time to grab and throw you while you hit him. If you throw him immediatley he has less chance to counter or strike you.

Very nice clip btw.

I wouldn't count on a throw to break bones, granted they can be vicious on concrete or asphalt but the day you get cocky and assume your throw ended the fight you might very well get cold-cocked because the guy was able to recover. My problem is that if you assume the guy is stunned enough for you to pull off a fancy throw and he still maintains his base you're probably going to eat a few shots. On the other hand there are def. times when you can use certain throws reliably if you're good at them. One way or the other I wouldn't want to tangle with that guy either

I also wouldn't rely on just a throw to end a fight Sag. But there are throws designed to break people in the specific way you cause thier body mechanics to handle the landing. Like I said before Mongolian wrestling or Shuai Chiao (a clip was posted in the CMA forums) and Combat Judo contain such throws also advocated by further attacks if necessary.

Dont expect ANYTHING emptyhanded to finish an opponent, people survive gunshots, parachute malfunctions and airplane crashes Always follow up with strikes until the opponent stops moving is our rule.

If you use anything "fancy" in a fight, you deserve to lose...remember the Female American snowboarder who blew the gold medal by showboating at the last moment? Never go flashy...most of our throws occour because of the direction you drive the opponents spine with strikes while our stepping placed a leg in the space the opponent needed to move in response to the strikes, if he still has root, you keep striking until he isnt effectively defending then the rest takes care of itself.

It is worth noting that Silat contains "Takedowns or throws" that destroy joints by their very application...by the time the opponent realizes he is in trouble he has been crippled...(like with a like a heel hook) but its your spine thats screwed.

I have to say his takedowns sucked...goes to show how well the strikes work, I guess...the takedowns were all muscle fucked and lacked any technical supporting elements depending entirely on the surpise and stun of the strike...flawed strategy but takedowns obviously werent his thing....good clip and premise just refine them takedowns and positional control....eeeekkk I sound like...oh never mind.

Yeah this takedowns seemed a little weak, I looked at them and thought... that seems a little too easy for him.

And not in a getting owned by your instructor way, I've had that happen, but it just seemed like.. if they other guy wanted to resist it, he could, and they wouldnt work.

Also I'm not sure about relying on "the stunning strike"... to allow you to do these throws. I noticed most of his stuff came after his strike which "rocked" the guy. Well... thats all well and good.. but his strike looked just like a haymaker or a punch, the question is, what gives him a better chance of landing the big punch then the other guy?

Neg reps for saying I took Krag Maga for how many weeks?

So what? Please explain this statement to me.

What this guy teaches is very different from my Krav Maga training, so I dont understand this uninformed opinion.

Edit; You can PM me if you dont want to "reveal" yourself on the forum, because you didnt in the rep.
