I would be worried about the kids mental state though, its alot to go through at such a young age.
The good thing is it appears from the article that he is showing remorse and at the same time feels that he did the right thing

I think the kid had to do what he had to do..
The kid's got more guts than any other 12 year old I've ever known. He did what he had to do.

Yeah, he should be commended
I'd seriously be shocked if the boy was charged.

Definitely did what he most likely had to do, a twelve year old, yeah it really does show how dangerous edged weapons can be in the hands of anyone. He should not be charged with anything as he did not do anything wrong, He should not however be given a medal or anything of that nature. killing someone, although in this case necessary, shouldn't be positively reinforced. As someone stated above, the only thing i too would be worried about is psychological trauma, but it does seem from the article he is doing alrite, in any case they should be very clear and sure he understands its not necessarily o.k. to fatally wound people with a knife even if there is an altercation, but that it was a dire situation that required an extreme response and he acted quickly and appropriately, believing his mother would be killed otherwise.
