ive always heard about how slapping a cupped hand on someones ear can cause lots of dmg, break the eardrum, cause em to lose balance etc but i was wondering if anyone has actually used this in a real life situation. did it work? how effective was it?

Man EmptyneSs, there was a guy who got into it here on the subway and he slammed his cupped hands over the guys ears. The guy looked at him for a second, and then commenced to kicking his ass.

After seeing that, I knew to drop that one off the list. An eye poke or better yet a quick head butt to the bridge of the nose is much, much more effective and if its CQ, the headbutt is easier and closer to the target. If you hit the guy right, you'll break his nose, his eyes will water up which blinds his vision for a couple of seconds, but most of all you'll tenderize up a nice little target that you should be able to really traumatize with a few more head butts or one well placed hammerfist. Land those two shots clean and the fight might be over depending on the guys desire to fight. If not, you'll have a big bull's-eye to aim for if he still has fight in him. Just don't let him get out of striking distance. If he doesn't go down, start punishing the bull's-eye. Once his nose starts to bleed one of two things will happen:

1)He'll panick at the sight of his own blood
or
2)He'll macho up and want some payback, but the bloodflow will begin to choke him a bit and mess with the air he needs because by now he'll be breathing heavy. Soon his hand will go up to his nose instinctively, or he'll begin coughing because the flow is going down his throat. More than likely, he'll raise his hand to his face because he'll want to wipe the tears out of his eyes, and when he does, take it to him. You don't get second opportunities that often, so make it count.

This is a more tame approach because of legalities, and I wouldn't want to hear about anyone doing time because of advice some would consider overkill. But personally after the first headbutt I'd make sure to keep going so there would be no need for a second chance. But that's just me.

Ear attacks can take some people out but, of course, the only way to be sure of taking ANYONE out is to knock 'em out.

I agree with that, Bri. Ear attacks will work on some people. So would a jump spinning back kick, but you wouldn't see most people doing it in a fight where their ass is on the line. Like you said ... knock 'em out if you can. But truthfully, could you see someone Brittany Spears' size knocking you out? Me neither. I could see her headbutting the hell out of your nose and following up with a hammerfist to your nose or open hand strike to the windpipe with no problem, though. Can't say I can quite see her doing well with the ear palming though.

but since it's the type of self-depricating humor you've all come to love from me...I might as well re-tell the story.

One night I had a little party at my house. Just a few kids playing presidents and assholes, **** the dealer, and suits, as well as other fun drinking related games. When everyone was pretty plastered, somebody...knowing I had gloves, decided it would be fun if we boxed, including trying to get some of the girls to go at it.

In order to try and convince one of the girls to participate... (here's the REALLY STUPID part) I told her she'd probably kick the other girl's ass, and asked her to punch me in the face as hard as she could so I could see who to bet on.

She slapped me in the ear, as hard as she could, and her hand was cupped JUST right. Instant pain and nausea...but I did go on to knock out another kid minutes later when we started boxing.

The pain lasted for several days, there was drainage, and I had to see a doctor, who told me I'd ruptured my ear drum, but I would regain my hearing in about 2 weeks, and he gave me some antibiotic ear drops so it wouldn't get infected.

So...yeah...the ear thing won't take somebody out of a fight...but it will stun them initially (as well as hurt on the inside like a red headed-waif-orphan-bastard that nobody wants to adopt), and give them some problems for a decent amount of time.

Not in the flesh. Funnily enough we had an advert in this country for an Orange drink called "Tango". In the advert someone takes a drink, then everything freezes, time stands still. During that freeze time a fat man with orange skin runs up to the guy taking a drink, and then simultaneously slaps him on each side of the face. He runs off, leaving the drinker shaking his head. The punch-line was "you've been Tango'd!"

But they had to stop the ad. Kids were "tangoing" each other, and hospitals were filling up with kids who had ruptured ear drums.


As for Britney Spears not being able to knock anyone out? With the appropriate training she could. Yes, we are aiming to combine mass with acceleration. She may lack a little in the mass area, but can easily make up for it in the acceleration, along with good timing and accuracy.

Of course the bogger people have more potential mass, but knocking someone out does not take super-human power.

Striking the ears with cupped hand(s) is one of the first techniques I taught my daughters. Simple to do, good distraction to confuse or disorient so you can inflict serious trauma to other targets! It hurts like hell and can cause permanent hearing loss. It's not a fight ender but it's a good start! Depending on the situation it will move his hands up or out so you can kick the groin while he's stunned from his broken ear drum(s). I emphasize multiple attacks in quick succession and rapid follow ups to every attack. He won't soon forget about the bitch slap that made him deaf or ruptured his ear drum(s) unless you give him a serious concussion too...

Bleeding from the ears is not necessarily a death blow but trauma is trauma. I like it. Right up there with hair pulling and eye gouges...

True, but professional boxers are arguably the best punchers in the world. No on would argue that. Yet most of them, including the heavyweights lack one punch knockout power. I've seen people take multiple shots to the head from Mike Tyson. I'm going to assume that you don't hit as hard as Tyson, and say that a knockout doesn't come as easily as some my believe. If you can score one, great. You've got one down and watch your back as you go. But I'll always rely on attrition for a KO. Not that you ever said that you believe in one punch KO's, but that's just how I live.

Still, I don't see Bittany Spears knocking out a grown man that's 6'0 tall and 225 lbs in a real altercation unless he has a serious glass jaw. I'll never say its impossible, but highly improbable.

BTW The commercial incident(Tango'd) had me laughing hard.

KO is not just about impact anyway. The punch you don't know about till it hits you is the one most likely to knock you out.

To be honest the side of the head and neck are full of vulnerable points. A good hard hooking smash, with fist or open hand, anywhere in that general area is going to send your opponent to an unppleasant place.

There will also be trauma to the brain and the neck if you hit hard enough. Oh yes..........
