As a Martial Artist it is important to be street smart and therefore we all have to be aware of everything going on around us all the time. This is considered to be common sense nowadays. When you spend all your spare time training you may overlook such common sense.
In order to be your best and react effectively you must be able to remain calm and relaxed in all situations. Apparently Gracie Jujitsu is the best Martial Art for street defense one on one without weapons. I don't know about this, though I have seen the brothers overcome much bigger opponents from some excellent schools many times. Rickson Gracie has fought and beaten up more opponents than all his brothers but has he fought the greatest? Royce Gracie has proved he is a great fighter but has he fought the greatest? I reckon that Chuck Liddel is one of the greatest fighters of this era of UFC and I believe the competition gets better all the time. Chuck is an excellent kickboxer, boxer, and wrestler and he has proven his worth as an Ultimate Fighter. It is unfair for me to compare such fighters and say one is better than another. Chuck Vs Vitor Belfort was a good fight but Chuck won by points. Vitor is an excellent boxer and also excellent at Jujitsu. Vitor has turned Pro Boxer and recently fought and won in the first round. I think that Vitor and Chuck are the best fighters on screen at the moment so if I combine and train in their fighting systems then maybe I will become the best I can be to. Maybe I will become a Master of street defense, or maybe not? Maybe i'll die trying? Maybe nobody is perfect. Maybe I should stop writing now? |

Again, in most "street" situations, there's going to be hard pavement involved, I am not knocking BJJ at all as a sport fighting art, it does have some value with its takedowns and escapes, but the majority of it is more applicable to sport tournaments..
I would say Muay -Thai,Krav Maga, boxing..

I take that back, I would say Bruce had the right idea with Jeet Kune Do.. take whatever is applicable, discard what is not... but apparently we got the "BJJ is king of all fighting arts" individuals in here...

A Street self defense master, HMMM sounds like a guy with point shooting, and CQC training as well as an FMA expert...no doubt this person would be armed to the teeth and very elusive, finishing all encounters as fast as possible would be the second priority, avoiding them would be first priority. Im pretty sure this person would be aware the longer it took a style to neutralize an attack, the less street safe this style would be. Any fighting style which hindered your ability to evade, run, or fight multiple opponents would be considered suicidal in this training program and therefore avoided. Any style that has no weapon training or defenses against weapons, would be stupid to train for street SD as well.

Maybe the street thug would kindly wait while the BJJ'er runs to change into his Gi and also pull out a gym mat, lol...
