Well, personally my preference for striking is mainly from the solar plexus and upwards
I train specifically for blocking a punch or two or three. and following with a knife hand to the side of the throat, which believe me! Is a very effective blow and will knock out the toughest of men with a good blow. also shooting the fingers or a fist for the throat will stop a man in his tracks, once you can't breath nothing else matters but breathing again,, warning though this is a potentially lethal blow, and use only in the most extreme circumstances also solar plexus with a palm strike or fist can knock a mans air out of him, therefore you can follow with a take down or another blow Peace |

There's no argument that the throat/side of neck/solar plexus are all good points, but if you find an opening anywhere I recommend you take it and keep hitting it.

Yeah, a good point
I guess that is just my preference of style, wait until the other guy makes the move, block, step out of way etc... and than make my move However a good technique though, I don't know if you happen to do these blocks, is the guy throws a punch at you, follow with a circle block which effectively changes the course of his punch, grab on to his arm with the block and pull him towards you, at the same time following with a solar plexus elbow will knock out his wind and after that you are in a really good position for a shoulder throw and a submission after.... yeah sounds kind of complictated and I am sure punching first would make the whole situation easier but, eh, guess just a conflict of styles peace |

It sounds good in theory but in practise does it work? I personally think catching punches is a load of bollocks. Even an untrained monkey can still throw a punch too fast for you to catch and even then you pretty much have to know it's coming and be totally ready for it. Too many things to go wrong in my opinion.
Keep self defence simple and the complicated techniques should stay in the training hall. Hey if you can pull them off in reality good on you, but most people can't and shouldn't try to when there is a simpler option. What style do you do?

Actually what I do is a mixture of styles, I have blended together kickboxing, karate, and kung fu to make an interesting hybrid.
also I did not say that I catch punches, and this technique is tryed and proven, you block with the edge of your arm meanwhile grabbing his arm and pulling him towards you. therefore you have the momentum of his body coming towards the momentum of your attack, which can be devastating. also I know how to bob and roll which I learned from boxing, so if needed I can avoid using hands to block all together.... basically I don't rely on strength but perfect technique and using pressure points to get the job done and the techniques are not so complicated once you get them down in muscle memory Peace p.s tell me about your styles |

Plus, my brother is a cop and he is helping me by telling me what people do on the street eg, how they attack, grab, position themselves etc so that I can study this and find effective ways of countering or avoiding these situations. There is nothing secretive or different that I am doing from those who have done similar things before me, but this is more for me, my family and those who want to learn (hopefully) good self defence without the bullshit. I still have a long way to go but I believe I'm on the right track.

I'm not sure how high a skill level you need to have mate, more about the desire and effort you want to put into it I think. Certainly you should know what you are trying to teach however but you don't need to be ex-special forces or 20th Dan super grandmaster or anything!!

I have designed my own art also. It is called Short Hand Empty Hand.
It is a great play on words, because I have paid to get my own book published, and also publish an internet magazine, on which I'm the best and most prolific contributor. So, short hand? As in writing? Get it? And short hand as in fighting short people? Get it? (one of my central tennets is to only fight the short ones, because the tall ones would kick my ass). Empty. Who knows about Kara-Te? That was "empty hand" (Short Hand Empty Hand!) and, after being exposed to the Japanese tradition of Shintoism, became "Empty Mind" (similar pronunciation too! Get it?!) Now, does anyone know a guy with a mind emptier than mine? Get it! |

I really like your article but i would like to add one more thing
I find joints hit very effective in a real fight not only it paralyzes the oppoent a couple seconds but it can also be used to break a grab or submission A lot of times a grappler necklect these areas while trying to get on a hold. |
