Has been ever since Grandmaster Flash.

Seriously, when I hear "Grandmaster," I think of somebody who's been studying for 35 or 40 years, and trained numerous people have gone on to high levels of proficiency themselves. Tim Tackett and Dan Inosanto would be good examples, if JKD used the term. Practically, though, I guess it's like the title of "king"...you're a king if you can get enough people to call you that.

$$$

that right there is why people try to invent their own styles.

i knew a martial artist who opened his own mcdojo and str8 up invented his own art which was nothing more than mcdojo tkd mixed with some bjj lessons he took. this guy tried to pass his art off as some obscure street fighting system from the middle east lol. i know this because this guy trained came to our gym to learn those bjj basics, and he left after a few months.

in fact, heres an article on the guys school....

Who cares? ..............

Stick (cane) fighting techniques have been around for centuries.

There is nothing NEW about it but a name...

TANJOJUTSU (SUTTEKI JUTSU) by any other name is still a (walking) stick style.

My Friend, the issue is the self awarded rank. What do you think of the issue?

Again, all rank was at one point self awarded.

Who really cares if someone wants to call them supreme overlord of the martial continuum. The title doesn't mean much if he crumples after the first hit. If he doesn't than he might just be better than a lot of masters who have had someone else give them their rank.

It is a non issue. It means nothing to me. If he wants to be the grand master of his own style... so, what?

He bleeds and breaths like all the rest (of us).

If I create my own style and award myself, lets say 3rd Dan and then promote myself every 4 or 5 years until I reach 10th--Am I a fraud? Or should I just start out with a high Dan? Enquiring minds wanna know.

Dude. ...... Why? Sandan is a teacher of students, rokudan (5th degree or "master teacher") the teacher of teachers. To be the (10th degree or "grand master" ) Judan you need only spread your style around the world...

Go for it buddy. I might even come out of retirement to pay you a friendly visit!
