What do you think of this statement? What do you think of this concept? Why are so many people claiming to invent so many styles?

it's really just marketing and differentiation.
Since using a style is almost always no tied to paying money to someone else to use the name, Now it's better just to have your own style and stop paying people for the privilege of using their style which you will almost invariably wish to change.

This guy became a Grandmaster in the process. That is the real issue. The Rank.

You have to see june 07 black belt magazine pg. 24. I don't wanna mention any names here on the net but I will say the topic is the cane as a weapon.

Isn't a grandmaster someone who has trained a lot of black belts or a lot of masters?

I think sometimes its a matter of politics. I invent "Britt's Asskicko" and teach it to you, you open a school and use some of my techniques and some of your own. I get in a huff because you're not teaching "Britt's Asskicko," so you say "fine, I just founded 'Hardball's North American Asskickfu.' " Then one of your students does the same thing to you.

It's a title, titles are meaningless. I'm some systems it does refer to someone who has trained lots of students, sometimes it's just the founder of the system

Well some with the title are frauds cause they don't have the corresponding skills. Strong candidates for www.bullshido.net

I didn't want to mention his name because I have a lot of respect for cane. I'm sorry that you had to mention his name. My question was directed at the title of "Grandmaster" I believe that title is becoming too loosely used.

Sometimes it's justified to "create a new style."
I mean let's face it...that is essentially what the Gracies did...they took bits and pieces, refined it through experience, then repackaged it. But by bringing a focus to the ground game, they literally did create a specific "style" fighting. I think if there's a real purpose behind the repackaging, it's justified. Unfortunately, my first reaction when I see a headline like that is: Zzzzzzzzzzz |

That heading came from an article in this (June 07) months Black Belt Mag.
