Hey, i just want your take on something....
The neighborhood here's been getting pretty rough, and the number of muggings has rised a lot. I know how to defend myself when attacked, but i'm thinking of getting a small, easy to use, NON LETHAL weapon to keep with me just in case. That means no knives and no guns, i don't want to kill someone, rather something i could break a wrist with, and could hide in my belt or under my shirt. Anyoby got an idea? |

At risk of sounding dumb, what is it that makes you want to avoid killing someone who's potentially trying to kill you? I think it's admirable that you are concerned for your potential attackers' well-being, and I think it shows strong character that you'd be willing to let a mugger gut you like a fish before carrying a weapon that could do the same to the mugger.
I guess what I'm getting at is that you've made some tough choices. You're staying in a rough neighborhood, knowing that it's getting worse. That's a negative mark right off the bat. Second, you're talking about carrying a weapon that won't kill an attacker. In other words, you're looking for a weapon that, at its best, will only injure. Under stress and real-world pressure, we can almost never expect the best, so what does that tell you about the potential of any weapon that fits your criteria? If you insist on staying in a bad neighborhood and you want something that's only going to injure, I'd recommend a combination of two weapons. Go with some serious pepper spray and a stun gun. I say both because one or the other is rarely enough to stop a determined attacker. However, spray a guy in the eyes and then zap him in the junk while he's trying to blink out the pepper, and you're probably going to get away clean. Stun guns to the neck are also pretty effective. Even moreso if applied with force, and behind a cloud of OC (oleoresin capsicum, the active ingredient in pepper spray). I'd forget about anything that breaks bones but claims to be a non-lethal weapon. If you're willing to break bones, you can still be brought up on charges as if you were using deadly force, so if you're willing to go that route, you might as well be carrying a knife or gun. |

I can't leave my neighborhood because i can't take my family with me, and stunguns are almost impossible to find here.
I don't carry a knife because i already almost killed someone once, he ended up in the er for a week, but i got off on self-defense. So? |

BTW, i can already break someone's arm easy if he goes at me, but i want something to be able to protect the person next to me as well (brother, girlfriend, they depend on me here), or if there are multiple attackers and I can't waste time grappling with one.

So you stabbed a guy in self-defense, you survived, and he went to the hospital. The cops and courts let you off, because it was justified. That sounds like all the more reason to stay with the one you know you can use.
I have to admit, I'm not really sure what you want anyone to say, here. It sounds like you're fishing for a particular answer instead of true opinions. Go with the pepper spray and some good boxing skills if you can't get a stun gun (which could be ordered online as easy as ordering a pizza, by the way). Where's "here" and maybe I can be of more help? |

I'm lebanon man, so i don't think you know the spot, lol.
I didn't stab him, he came at my bro with a tire iron, i managed to wrestle it from him and bang him in the arm then the head, that's why i'm thinking about using something like that, but i don't want to walk around with a big ol tire iron in my shirt! I'd be grateful with whatever you can give me |

hey man, i can give you and idea, maybe it will sound like a pussy weapon but it can rescue you even from the biggest strongest mofo in the block, its easy, let them cry, use peper spray (i hope i spelled peper right).
I carried it a while ago, and it helped me in a "hit and run" style but you could go other way "spray and then kick his ass, brake a bone"its small for your pocket and you cant kill anyone whit it. i cant remeber any other weapon, that cant kill a man, except this cya

Life is choices and your post and responses to Mr. Brewer make it sound like you are trying to not make any. Either choose to carry an effective weapon, or choose not to. Guns and knives are popular because guns and knives work. Non-lethal objects such as brass knuckles or small metal sticks are available and they might work, but then fists work almost as well and don't take time to deploy. I watched a couple having a screaming match outside a local club once. During the course of the argument, she got out some spray and sprayed him two or three times before she got in their car and left. Afterwards, he sat down and scrubbed his eyes, but he managed to ignore the spray almost completely in the heat of the fight. That's the trouble with stuff that can't hit hard enough to seriously injure or kill- in the end, those weapons depend upon a failure in the willfulness of the attacker.. That's a huge question mark to leave in the equation.

If you're in Lebanon, I can't see the problem with a knife or small pistol. It's not as if they're rare.
Still, if you insist on maintaining a non-lethal approach, I still say the combination of pepper spray and a stun gun is hard to beat. You can order a stun gun through a number of online dealers, or just look at Bud K. They've got one that puts out 950,000 volts, and fits like a set of brass knuckles, so its use would be pretty intuitive for someone trained to hit. I haven't seen one or tested it myself (I carry a knife and a gun, and have no qualms about dealing with an attacker in the same manner as he intends on dealing with me), but it seems appropriate for your situation. It's also pretty inexpensive. |

There are many many many accidental deaths from stun guns. Since this guy doesn't want to kill anyone, I wouldn't suggest a stun gun.

Tant posted a list of legal blade lengths in each state. Can someone re-post it -- might be helpful here.

I carry a knife. I have gun in my car.
How about some scissors. You can still get in trouble if you do something stupid so be careful and only use for self defense. You can kill someone with these. ![]() Shot at 2007-08-03

lol, if you are in lebanon you should pretty much have access to some of the most advanced weaponry in the world. why dont you talk to some hezbollah members and buy some ak47s off them. they have m16s also if you want american made. theres also the iranians, you could buy weapons from them too as they run weapons into lebanon day and night. if assault rifles arent enough, you could save up some more cash and get an advanced rpg from syria. the ones supplied by syria laid waste to israeli tanks, that is serious firepower. why dont you just talk to some fools down the block and see what you can get your hands on.
how much do one of these cost over there?? ![]() |
