Exclamation Job Opening in Brooklyn, NY

The Center for Anti-Violence Education, Inc.

Full-time Position Available

"Community Education Coordinator"

The Center for Anti-Violence Education (CAE) is a multi-racial, intergenerational, community-based, nonprofit organization that develops and implements violence-prevention programs. CAE’s holistic programs help women, teen women, children, and other communities especially affected by violence build skills, heal from past abuse, and organize to counter the destructiveness of violence. A feminist, women-led organization, CAE brings a commitment to fighting racism and heterosexism to all its activities. CAE was founded in 1974 as Brooklyn Women’s Martial Arts and changed its name in 1991 to better reflect the range of its work. CAE has a full-time staff of 7 and a budget of $560,000.

CAE’s Community Violence Prevention Project (CVPP) offers violence-prevention workshops and courses in shelters, classrooms, senior centers, unions, workplaces, and churches throughout New York City. CVPP helps individuals strengthen their spirits and empower themselves with violence-prevention and safety skills and information. CVPP is unique as a violence-prevention program because it combines practical safety information with a feminist, anti-racist, anti-oppression analysis of violence. CVPP empowers individuals and communities to protect themselves, to speak out, and to challenge violence whenever possible. Workshops and courses are tailored to meet the specific needs of the community. CVPP reached 836 people during 2002-2003.

CVPP also offers consulting services and technical assistance to other organizations—including curricula development and staff training and development. CVPP also created a new dimension to its services—a safety assessment of an organization’s offices or facility, with recommendations to increase the safety of your staff and clients.
