It's strange how N.O.W. and other organizations fully support causes like these, then turn around and complain when US troops end up on the ground trying to put a stop to the bad things going on.

Talk about a massive hypocricy for political expediency.

A teenage girl I have met a couple times was raped last week by three teenage boys. The girls mother isn't going to press charges against the boys because she is friends with one of thier mothers (the state may charge them anyway, but that isn't the point)

The more distressing part of this story is not in the first sentance, but in the second one.

Press charges my arse. There are millions of acres of desert wasteland in the world...

Sorry to hear that Greg.

That is a horrible mother! I would love to give her a piece of my mind. That's pathetic.

You know, I go into the gym every night, and people are polite and respectful. We don't allow cursing, we enforce sir/ma'am type protocol. It's friendly and there's plenty of kidding around, but people are generally nice to each other - or at least keep thier mouth shut when they don't feel like being nice.

Spending time in that atmosphere makes me more aware (I think) of how the world is outside the gym. People in restaurants swearing loudly enough for everyone to hear, horns honking at the slightest delay at a green light - cars speeding through stale yellow lights. Those stickers on cars where Calvin is pissing on [you, ex-wife, everyone, boss, insert flavor here].

I think that these petty rudenesses and little digs sort of create an inflation of nastiness, where acting like a self-absorbed jerk is the norm. Pretty soon we all learn to tolerate ever greater levels of nastiness.

Consider shows like 'Cops'. When we watch that show, we are essentially getting our jollies watching already unhappy people's lives go from bad to worse. We are training ourselves (and our children) to laugh at other peoples misfortune.
Then we wonder what happened to human decency when it counts.

Who talks about morality and good behavior and manners? I don't know. I've been as guilty as anyone at times, I suppose, but some days I look at my society and just feel a little sick in the heart.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Sad about the girl and pathetic about the mother. The worst thing about not pressing charges against a rapist is allowing the pattern to continue. Good odds that that wasn't the first time for them and better odds it won't be the last.

I know of a teen who was raped by a boy she knew, and that had attempted to rape her friend. Because her friend never came forward, he moved to attack her. I don't think she has done anything as well, so she'll pass that pain to another.

No apology needed. It's all common sense but it has become uncommon in the sense that people fail to address the unraveling of society's moral fiber. Who can forget 9/11? When people were suddenly so polite? Now the same person with that flag on their car, that would so nicely let you merge into traffic, is the same S.O.B.,with a disgracefully tattered flag, cutting you off and flipping you off. That is the problem though, we do get that forgetting disease. Why did we need a bunch a terrorists to hit us in the back of the head to realize it and what's it going to take to get us back?
That's a scenario I don't even want to entertain.
I just know that I am responsible for my conduct and do the best that I can in this life......what did Ali say...."good deeds are the rent we pay for our time on earth."....and I 'm sure or I hope that most feel the same....I want to believe that there are more people like "us" than people like "them" that will keep this world together.
Anyway...thanks for letting me vent.

As far as people acting rude; There was an expirement in which rats lived in an unusual high density, and they ended up eating on another. So basically unless people are under strict orders from a commanding officer, when you have a very large group backed in with external pressures there will be a high level of violence.
sidebar:- Despite the many rat infested slums in New York City, only 311
people are bitten by rats in an average year. But 1,519 residents
are bitten annually by other New Yorkers....welcome to the Big Apple.

Anyways are you searious that there are that many reported biting every year? If so we should make mouth guards mandatory. jk
Point taken, but we all have pressures and problems ...it's how we choose to respond...... and yes, the biting problem is factual.

Thanks for the support, guys. The girl is with her in-law family for the time being and they are good people, so that's alright.
