Regarding men, Marc MacYoung has a term he calls "MPS" - male pride syndrom. It is like, when a guy won't back down from a confrontation, even though everyone in the room, including himself, knows he should.

By the way, I heard this one on NPR this morning. It is a joke from Garrison Keillor: "Do you know that studies show that women use twice as many words as men in an average day ? The reason is, they have to repeat everything !"
