Hey all! Well, I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice as to how to train with my girlfriend. She isn't exactly a big fan of the gym or the dojo...she's a bit on the lazy side hehe. I'm not trying to get her to workout with me for the physical benefits; she's gorgeous (she needs no help in the looks department hehe). However, I feel that going to the gym and the dojo would be great for her health and stress-relief, as well as her peace of mind. However, I don't want to offend her by telling her to go to the gym...she might think I'm calling her fat or something. I also feel that she needs to learn self-preservation techniques in case I'm not around to protect her (she lives about 30 min away from me). I love her a lot and I would like to share my love of self-preservation and fitness with her. Any advice as to how to make the gym and the dojo more enticing?

If the way you expressed your feelings to us don't move her to at least try it, nothing will. I'm hearing the words of a man who is interested in sharing something good with someone he cares about. No ulterior or selfish motives.
We here are all convinced of the benefits, now you just have to talk to her and convince her. Do it by saying to her what you said to us, but do it only once. Don't become a nag.

T-3,
How come you get to have such a cool avatar? And what's PBG when the rest of us are just registered users?

Well I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Your girlfriend would be motivated to joia gym or dojo so she could share that with you. At 30 miles away that prevents you both from joining the same gym and working out together.

Well yeah it's good to see a good response to this question. Like I said, I'm not trying to nag her or change her. During the summer she lives about 25 minutes away from me, but during the school year (we go to the same university) we'll be living close to each other, maybe only a block away. We both have free access to the University recreational center and gym, so it would be cool to share some productive time together.
Actually, I was thinking of taking up salsa lessons or rock climbing with her...seems like a good plan to me. Also, I think that some knife sparring with gloved hands and rubber knives might be good "therapy" haha...talk about relieving stress. |

RapidAssault16 - If she's not really all that interested, you can help make it more enticing to her by making it fun. Try to make it a progression. Maybe start out asking her to go for a walk with you or find a fun recreational activity that she enjoys. Start participating with her. If it's not fun, she won't want to do it. After all, not many people enjoy doing things they don't think are fun. For martial arts, you could playfully start a wrestling match (make sure she wins the first few times!!!). Eventually, she may even put on a pair of boxing gloves and try to hit you. If you let her hit you a little and keep it on a very fun, playful level she may start to enjoy it.
T-3 - I'm stuck with this stupid registered user title and no avatar. How do you suggest I go about getting my title changed? What does PBG stand for? Is that your image in the avatar? You must have some pull on these forums. Do you think you could put in a good word for me? Do you have any suggestions for my custom title? Hope you don't mind all my questions, I'm just a very inquisitive person! Bruce |

Don't have her do something she's not interested in. It will only increase her lack of motivation.
Instead of taking her to the gym, take her on an adventerous, outdoor date. You can go water-skiing, cycling, dance lessons, mountain climbing or simply go for a relaxing walk. This way you're introducing a work-out that's probably a lot more fun than going to the gym. It's probably a lot more romantic than slapping on the sweats and doing dojo. Well, I guess I repeated what has already been posted. ![]() Hope it all works out. |

These are some great suggestions. Making it fun is a great idea (it is not fun if you always loose!). Personally, I started taking self defense in order to learn how to defend myself, and found out how much fun it was afterward. Without trying to scare her, maybe you could tell her that you are concerned for her welfare when you aren't around to play protector. Perhaps you could show her a few key moves that she could use if needed. (Note: If all you can come up with is "go for the groin," you should find a different teacher). And I'm with Bruce here--How do you get a custom avatar? I am not very computer-literate. I even tried going to the thread where Crazy Joe tried to explain it, and I still can't seem to figure it out. Is it some big secret? I know you have to have X many posts. Help! These avatars we have to choose from are really cheesy.
