I have to get an adult female relative a birthday gift and was thinking about a women's self-defense video. Any suggestions???? Thanks.

Instead of a video, how about a class?

It would be much more effective.

Well, my relative lives about five hours away from me. It would be tough for me to check out classes near her. That's why I'm interested in a video. I've seen ads for all kinds of these videos...I just figured somebody on here would know one decent one.

I'd seriously consider buying Diana Moscarda's series on Women's Self-Defense. She's a lady with a lot of ability and experience, and is a magnificent instructor. I trained with her personally for several years, and she taught me a lot. Often, we'd train together at the Inosanto Academy, and she was my senior under Paul Vunak. She's done an awful lot for women's self-defense and does a great job of approaching the subject from a very realistic and complete point of view. I think you can get her tapes through PFS Video and Don Wasser, often advertised in Black Belt. Definitely some of the best material available!

Solid site, but it seems more geared toward sport than true women's self-protection. In Diana's courses, she makes it very clear that prevention, awareness, and a whole host of things not directly related to fighting are the most important aspects of a good self-protection system. The physical skills are important to be sure, but I think what our host is looking for might involve a more well-rounded look at the factors that preceed the physical. Avoiding a fight rather than fighting and all that...
