Low Confidence By kicksindabank - Wed, 13 Sep 2006 02:27:27 GMT

=========

I know martial women are strong, hard core, and powerful. Yet, I feel so inadquate in karate. No one has done anything harmful, mean, spiteful, or cruel.

I just feel as if I am not a true woman of the martial arts. There are others in the class who are stronger, better, and faster than I am. When we are in practicing weapons, sparring, or kata's they are able to pick it up like snap and I am slower than a turtle going uphill.

What confidence builders to you woman have to.

more sparring may help. being put under some pressure might help bring out the tenacious side in you and help build some confidence in yourself.

the question was asked by a real person on that other martial arts forum. i guess our advice here is so good that other martial arts forums have to outsource their questions to us.

At the most basic level, I believe positive re-enforcement is the way to build a woman's confidence in the martial arts. When they do something right, you should give them positive encouragement. In addition to that, I think repetition of technique is essential. This builds their fundamentals.

We don't have any information on this woman's current fitness level or condition. She could be an out of shape soccer mom trying to keep up with 20 somethings...physical fitness is important in the martial arts.

Once they've built a technique base, you need to figure out what ticks them off and get em taking it out on the pads (or you!). Get them hitting with real intent and no stops! If she can pop the pads and throw a solid combo at me (while I'm putting up some resistance) I'd feel better about her ability to potentially get out of a confrontation.

Don't worry about it. Most of the women and men don't live up to the collective fantasies of what a martial artist should be. Worry more about doing your best. Forget the expectations.

i wuldnt worry if i was you... some people pick things up quicker than others its just genetics.... but for what reason are you inadequate? martial arts is about the effort u put into it, if u concentrate and try 100% then you are as competant a martial artists as anyone else.... go home at the end of the night and say hey i tried really hard tonight well done!

this is sound advise, don't compare yourself to others, just work on your own technique..build your strength and stamina...focus on nutrition as well. all these things will help to sharpen the mind. Do your 100%, not others.

There are no fantasies in the martial arts.

Try 10 x 3 minute rounds of all-out muay thai pad work....you will be bathing in your own sweat and sucking wind like a fish out of water.

Hard work keeps your feet on the ground.

The girly syndrome....

I see that a lot.

*I am fat* when they are not
*I am ugly* when they are cute
*I am dumb* when they are smart

*I could never do that* when they don't try
*You are doing this so easily* when I see traits I wish I had!

STOP comparing yourself to others on the basis of weakness. Because everybody has them.

Find your strong suit. Work from there!

You are slow, find and practice drills that enhance your speed. You may never be Speedy Gonzales, but you can get quicker.

If you are lacking muscle tone and control, work on that.

*Everything I do, I need to do 100 times. Quitting is not an option* We teach this to our youngest students, or, as the old Chinese proverb puts it: If I fall down 7 times, I stand up 8 times
