Why? Because you are comfortable with one another, trust one another and respect one another. There's that rare gal who is self-confident, just doesn't give a flip and will do it because she want's to do it AND she thinks its cool....nice ![]() This is my kinda woman

I guess MA in general tends to be very male dominated, yet all the women who've 'stayed the course' that I've encountered, were beyond the average male in terms of mindset. I'd guess that women, would be less inclined to use MA as a vehicle to 'self develop' than a man would. I have three female MA friends that I've known for a long time and they're truly exceptional people. |

Once they get over it, they are there to stay! I live in the South, and the expectation of what is female is pretty much warped! I get a lot of negative reactions suggesting a girl or woman take MA, like I offered them a turd or something! But the ladies that take with me are the fines! My friend was also raised in a Mennonite context (not quiet as archaic as the Amish, but right up there) and for her it was very difficult to let go of a half a decade of 'turning the other cheek' indoctrination!

That'd seem to be true.
I'd like to introduce you to others of a similar mindset. Quote:
That's not to say it's 'unique' in general, but it's 'unique' to me and something I'll ponder on. Thank you. |

My friend was abused from childhood on and she tells everybody who will listen how therapeutic it is for her to do all those things (We are primary a TKD school, but we started doing some ground work and short stick) Hell, even little things like the Ki-Haps/yells can have a profound impact!

She could sub guys! She wasn't afraid to tangle with anyone, even the 240-lb ers and while her technique wasn't enough to overcome a 200 + lb ers technique AND strength, she could tap out the mediocre 150-170 lb ers and even some of the bigger n00bs who didn't know what they were doing.

My karate school has more female black belts than male.
My BJJ school has 4 female students. (3 if you count me out as I'm not training due to pregnancy - but I do go to class once a week and coach the guys from the sidelines LOL!)

Looking at your statement, I'd say either women prefer to train in karate than BJJ or your school was started by a lady karateka. And that Australian women will stay the course in karate - which is why they advance up to black belt.

Yes, my school was started by a lady karateka. She has a great history (Australian team, then coaching the Australian team), so the female students who might have been intimidated by a more "macho" school have a great role model.
