Keep in mind, it takes more courage for a woman to get involved in grappling or combat sports than it does a man. Its a more profound experience for them to overcome the mental strain.
While this may not sound politically correct, look at the female to male ration in said classes... Doesn't mean they can't do it, rather that most don't have the desire or fortitude to get involved in it. On top of that, most women for either cultural or personal reasons would not feel comfortable having a man on top of them or being on top of a man, even under the premise of learning self-defense. That being said, any woman who would participate and stay in such a class would have to go above and beyond her comfort zone to overcome those cultural or personal boundaries. PS - I've got female friends who are bad ass free-style wrestlers and BJJ practitioners who get mad respect from most guys. So bring on the neg. reppers...lol

I call it like I see it. I'll gladly teach what little I know to a woman, if she's interested. Most aren't. I'll let her go full-contact and land kicks, punches, knees (with ma' groin cup, head gear and mouthgauard on...lol) and counter at a level she's comfortable with so as to build her up. I'll tell her if she's hitting hard enough to stop a wuss like myself...if not, we got back to pad work and conditioning and try again later. If she's already a bad ass, then I've got to go on survival mode! If you don't believe me, look up one of the pro-hopefulls in muaythai or MMA and give it a go with 'em. ![]()

Unfortunately he is only too right. There is a very warped concept of femininity, of what is ladylike and what not. Our adult TKD classes are surprisingly evenly stocked, but there are many more boys enrolled than girls! And heaven knows, it is a difference to spar with a man that outweighs you by almost your entire self than with a woman, even if she is bigger. It is odd to get up close with a 'stranger' but how are you to learn if you only deal with woman on woman?! (That is a question I am itching too ask our instructo for our ground escape/Hanmudo classes, but he is the squares of squares and we are in the modest South - I don't see anything else happening!)

But there is a physcological divide betwwen men and women in my opinion.
Some women and some men just don't wan't to hurt another person even in self-defense so how dowe teach these pepole to fightback when their saftey really depends on it? How do we bring out a survival mentallity in them? Women seem to suffer from this more than men and this is unfortunate because they are at a much greater risk of being victim of as crime so how do they overcome the I don't want to hurt anyone no matter what mentality?

Ultimately it is that person's choice whether they fight back, both in class and in real life. |

True. But especially women are taught from early on to play 'nice'. Being a tomboy is a bad thing (not to me mind you, that'd my kind of girl!) while everybody expects the boys to wrestle. Once you are grown, it's a tough lesson to unlearn! Unfortunately, there is some sort of thresh hold anciety that keeps many (way too many) women from exploring this part of their personality!

Well, I got my best friend to go and she would never be caught dead wrestling or doing jits or anything like that. And she got a lot out of it and fought beautifully.
I wonder if girls who are involved in other sports would be more likely to learn fierce determination in addition to being "nice." |
