Default MT: When in doubt..cry?

When in doubt..cry? By Sandy - Thu, 03 May 2007 18:43:59 GMT

=========

I was participating in a weapons seminar yesterday and there was a guy there who said that if a woman is ever attacked by a guy with a weapon, she should cry (or pretend to )to throw him off guard. He also seemed to be under the impression that crying would stop the assault altogether.
I don't really agree with this advice because some attackers look for people who are either off guard and/or easily dominated and this tactic gives the impression of both, which can cause some attackers to become even more aggressive. My instructor also pointed out that teary eyes can result in blurred vision which is not something you want to experience if you are in that situation.

What are your opinions on the subject?

your kidding right? Cry?........Scream I can see but cry? The guy has already decided for whatever reason you are his "target". Why do i say that...because your being attacked. Groins are ok but it takes a second for the strike to register with our brains. You have to face the reality that to get away you may get hurt. A person weilding a knife can be punched in the throat but with the weapon they have a greater reach. In a real life situation if i were attacked by an armed, determined attacker, I would be pretty happy if all i needed was some stiches to a defense wound, if I can land one good strike to his windpipe. That will drop anyone, no wait, its over, and you can go get help.

I say to all my students, male or female - never act defensive or back away. Psychologically you are giving your opponent confidence.

If I fought someone on the street and they are acting calm, it would freak me out a bit because that is not a normal reaction. Or like people have said - screaming and shouting as it puts people off attacking.

My mate used to go mental in fights (screaming like a lunatic) and it was frightening to watch. He didn't have the best talent martial art wise but people naturally get defensive when you shout at them.

To think that crying would put an attacker off the assault is ridiculous. I get very angry when people teach 'female self defence' and give stupid advice like that. It is extremely dangerous and is building false confidence in women
