Why no women in the UFC (or equivalent)? By Jonathan - Mon, 13 Aug 2007 12:44:12 GMT
========= Got into a short discussion on this with a classmate; she had said that perhaps the biggest reason would be because people would be watching it from the viewpoint of the spectacle of a 'cat fight'; I think I understand what she means. However, of the women I've seen practice the MMA, they are dedicated, hard-working, and no-nonsense when they're out there. I know there have been a few female fighters in some organization (the name escapes me now). But why is it the UFC can't induct a women's 'branch' of the organization, and why can't we expect people to watch such matches while concentrating on the virtues of the fighter's skill, rather than their gender? I know it took a while for women's boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling to take off... but with those 'forefather' arts/styles, I'd think the UFC or equivalent would be a natural (and easier) progression. Thoughts? * Also, mods: I wasn't sure if this should go in the MMA forum, or this one... please move if I have it in the wrong spot, thanks! EDIT: Bodog. I think that's the name of the organization I was trying to think of. Not sure how widely known it is *shrug*. Things take time to change. It will, slowly, just like in other sports. They have women's MMA competitions in Japan already. I think there might have been one in the US as well, but I can't remember the details (I only heard about it through word of mouth). HooknShoot maybe?
The more women that get involved, the sooner the change will happen. There has to be a market for it before they will provide the means to put together something like a women's UFC. |

I've never seen what he was refering to, but I am wondering if you meant those specific matches, or women's mma in general. If you mean no one wants to see women's mma then I think you are wrong.
I like to watch the way other people move to improve my own skills. The techniques that guys use on guys are different than the ones girls use to fight girls. It means that there is more material available out there for men than women. I'm okay with that, as there are more men than women in the martial arts world, but I would like to have something to look and compare myself to or learn from and there isn't a lot out there. |
