Need help with my daughter By Jai - Sun, 04 Nov 2007 05:23:47 GMT

=========

First off, forgive me for intruding, I promise not to peek here but I need some advise from women in MA. I have been involved in MA for 20+ years and have taught younger females before, but since becoming a father it has put a whole new spin on things for me. My oldest girl is 7 years old. She is however, an amazon of a little girl(I do not mean this in ANY way to be a bad thing), in the top 95% for her age in height and weight. Shes in the upper 4 foot range already and about 95-100 pounds. She is built alot like my dads side of the family. This makes her uncomfortable around kids her age because well, shes twice the size of most of them. This has lead to alot of social problems. No physical fights yet thank god, because she would destroy the poor kids I feel. Now I think MA would be good for her, to keep her toned and help her make friends. The only problem is, the only MA school anywhere near us is a sports TKD school, and they focus ALOT on the sports side of it, something that I think may make her more self conscious. I've tried to teach her myself, but she has trouble understanding the difference between "daddy" and "instructor" . Help?

From a parent's point of view:

Don't teach here, not yet any way. My son takes MA at the same school I am an Assistant Instructor, whenever possible I have another instructor supervise him, for the obvious reason, that I am Mom and he is kid.

As Participating in a more sports oriented branch of TKD myself (not pure sports, but pretty heavily) I am always happy to see more girls in class. At least in our school there is no discrimination for hight, though we do have a few kids that at the tender age of 12 or 13 are invited to join the adults in class because they are so big they can't find an adequate training partner among the juniors. Depending on the set up for the school, your daughter will be mixed with older kids so her size won't matter as much.

I'd give it a try. You usually find a better group of kids at the dojo than the forced mix at school as well!
