There's two issues here which I find disturbing, though they are probably related. I've had this discussion with countless men none of whom thought there was anything wrong with 'sexy' photographs of female fighters funnily enough! There was plenty of the 'ooh I'd love to grapple with her' and 'she can choke me out anytime' comments. I would love, just once, for a male to take a female fighter seriously, just once without the sexual remarks however well meant or light hearted. Yes I know that many female athletes from many sports market themselves in this way (and some men) but does it help us in this case to get people to take female fighters seriously? Then it comes to my other bone of contention, men who think women shouldn't fight because 'we are sweet and fluffy' and it's just not right two women bashing each other up!
Can you only be a worthwhile fighter if you are pretty enough to market yourself successfully or if you are that pretty perhaps you shouldn't fight!

I would venture that you might be successful if your promoted image was sexy, but that you'd definitely be successful if you're rock solid and wipe the floor with your opponents. I mean, come on: this is a competitive combat sport. Winning your fights = success.

As for men taking women seriously, it's true that showing them a sexy picture doesn't make men think, "wow, hard core." But it's not meant to is it? It's meant to make the men pay to see the sexy ladies get sweaty; there is a level on which fights are all about the money. Not saying it's right. Not defending it. Just telling it like it is.

In my experience, the best way to make men take a woman seriously, is for her to work hard, keep a clear head, and not to take herself to seriously. But that's a recipe for respect for anyone isn't it? We're all just people when you come down to it.

Pretty sure I just said, "the best way to be respected, is to be worthy of respect." Heh. Pardon my redundancy.
