Women and BJJ By Destiny77 - 05-10-2008 07:36 AM

=========

Hi,
I've been a member here for awhile but post very little. I read the post and feel that the members here are very informative. Here goes my question: my karate class has been invited to join a BJJ seminar. My first instinct was to take the seminar. All the guys in class are going but the women are not interested. I being a women am conflicted because I do want to go. My question is for anyone who is familiar with BJJ, if I am the only women taking the class and say maybe 30 men will I feel uncomfortable and will I get anything out of the class? I would apprectiate anyone's input on this subject.

Thanks

There have been a number of women in the BJJ classes and seminars I've attended (at two different schools). As far as I can tell (being a guy), all the instructors and male students try very hard to be friendly, respectful and supportive. Everyone gives a lot of credit to women who have the guts and determination to roll around on mats with a bunch of sweaty men in gis! So go for it!

There tend to be fewer women in BJJ classes and your feeling about being uncomfortable is natural, but if the school has a good instructor - you'll find that your classmates (and instructor) are there to train (and help you) and will go easy with you to get you comfortable.

It depends on the school. Just go, and feel free to leave if it sucks. But in general I've found that most BJJ schools are more respectful than most no-gi schools. (except for mine, which is all i could ever ask for!)

So you're going to a bbj seminar at another school right? Just go and have fun. It's a little silly to ask internet people who don't know you whether or not you'll bee uncomfortable. You may be a little, you may love it and never want to come back. Hard for us to say without knowing you.

there are some new chicks that joined our bjj class and when they entered the matt for a drill, some big dumbass guy rolled with one of them as if she was a man her own size, it was terrible. the guy who did that got put in his place by a so called "enforcer" type. you know, the one student the instructor goes to when someone needs to be knocked out or something.

There's a really good article by Liz Posener which helps newbie girls avoid things like that.

i explained to her that she should not roll with just anyone, that she should find a handful of good partners she can trust and work with, and then i pointed out a few people who are good to train with.

Right on. If it's jits, I go for anyone who is a blue belt or higher. If it's no-gi I'll pick a smallish nice-looking guy (assuming there aren't girls there). Also a good school has coaches that are trained to recognize and prevent it before it happens... Like for example when I went to Straight Blast I was about to roll with someone who was almost brand new (because I didn't pick someone fast enough) and one of the instructors noticed and put us both with other people...
