Default Women's Counter-offensive

Hi everyone, I would like to clarify some things if you don't mind. When I first joined this site, I noticed the Women's Self-Defense Forum, and almost immediately wrote Mr Mousel asking him to change the name to Women's Counter-Offensive Discussion Forum, because sometimes just naming something can alter its perception, and we both were curious to see if anyone would notice, or hopefully comment upon, the change. It has often been said that 50% of learning anything is learning its vocabulary, how to speak in the local dialect, in a way. We were hoping that someone would notice the name change, and perhaps start a thread about the mental aspects involved. It is a kind of experiment, in other words. I have noticed with my female students that when I emphasize that they are taking control of the situation rather than continuing to react to their attacker they seem to pick up things faster, and coincidentally perhaps, enjoy class a lot more. This is the quintessentially Thai way of looking at combat: You just do what you want to do and ignore what the other person is doing. Take control of your life and do not let your attacker dictate to you. Here is your chance, and I hope someone will take control of this thread and spin a web. Thank you

I just considered it a PC thing. The word is not the action. That's why I coach fighting, but will not coach womens self-defese/counter-offensive. Changing the name will not help anyone defend themselves better. Only by developing good solid, practical, functional fighting skills, will they be able to defend themselves.

I didnt notice until you said it.

Gerald .. i disagree with what you say. Cham explained the significance of the name change, and I have to agree with him. The ability to fight has alot to do with your mind ... not just your body.

I dont think chama ment changing the name of this forum would enable people to fight better. He used it to get his message accross is all.

i agree with jesse and chalambok. fighting in the real world is 85% mental. thinking you can win is important. that's why the skill of a lot of smaller fighters goes down the drain against a big guy--even if the bigger guy is not a skilled fighter. when you are intimidated or think you won't come out on top, your ability to fight is seriously diminished. self defense is a bad name--it should be something like protective offense. being defensive or having a defensive mindset can get you hurt/killed.

just my 2 cents

Agree that fighting is mostly mental. That's one of the reasons that I feel changing it from womens self-defense to counter-offensive or by giving it any title besides learning to fight, is making the waters murky on what you need to be doing. If your goal is to learn to defend yourself, then you need to learn to fight. No name, or set of technques will help you achieve that goal if you don't develop good fighting skills. I just don't like to it call it anything else besides what it is,Fighting. The only exceptions I make is to emphasize the need for a well develop delivery system and good techinque. That if you're a small person then you can never rely on strength or power. That is you're going to fight, that you're almost always going to be fighting at a disadvantage. So you need to train with that in mind.

First of all, I must say I agree with everyone so far. It is fighting, but so much more goes into it. Learning how to think is important too, otherwise meditation would not be such an integral part of every fighter's preparation. We must remember that, for the most part, women don't get in fights, the way men seem to at times. Mostly, women are attacked. And yes, they must fight like hell when that happens. My personal experiences have shown that most people fight hardest when they are trapped in a corner, but there are those who give up, sometimes just because they don't feel they can win. Defend has a negative, defeatist connotation to it. Offensive has the ring of victory. I know it is not that simple, so please keep up the good critiques.

Default Hummm!

I liked the name when I saw it, and thought it was different.

Maybe the change of the name will help women have a different mind set, maybe not, but as long as the training goes in the right direction and you and yours feels the name works then go with.

I do think its go to see you'd make a change to see what reactions you would receive.
