Don't know your exact location so can't say what your travel would be. Check out these people at Modern Warrior, very good. There are highly trained women that teach there. http://www.modernwarrior.com/

KO2,
I live in NYC and if you refer to the Shaolin temple on downtown on broadway I did go there to check it out. Not bad but the the Shaolin Temple in queens is more respected. The Venerable Goulin was Jet Li's teacher from what I am told. But I think you should follow everyone's advice. From china town to midtown is martial art paradise in NYC Go to some schools and speak with the instructor to see if they are helpful with your questions. Remember teh type of instructor is important or more importatnt than the art becuase you are just starting. I would strongly recommend Hapkido here is one link. A lot of the hapkido is taught with TKD. Wushu may be another good option it is very athletic. Also reaserch online what styles you are intersted. A boxing gym might also be a good start ( a real gym not "aerobic boxing or something), some of them will have Muay Thai classes also. I personally like Kingsway adn then Church street Boxing. Church street boxing is also in the same building as Vee Arnis Jujitsu and Machado Brazilian Jujitsu so look at them as well. There is a good Muay tai school at the Worlds gym on mercer street and 3rd street http://www.worldmartial.com/ http://www.shaolin-overseas.org/ http://www.boxinghelp.com/new_york.html

i would recommend the vee arnis jitsu school, not just for the vee jitsu though. they also have a great women's self defense class and a muay thai class. also like IPON said there is church street boxing in the same building. so you have a bunch of choices all in one. good luck with whatever you choose.

I would not put too much emphasis on pepper spray because even trained police officers can barely put it to use. I would look into boxing, muay thai or kickboxing, jkd, kajukenbo, and various escrima/arnis styles. shoalin would not be my first choice for self defense. Also don't worry about going to a class with big guys. They look intimidating but you could not have a better atmosphere to train than to train with large guys. You will learn how to handle them and it will benefit you on the street in case a big guys does come around. Besides that also means you make a few really big friends and they could help you kick the crap out of someone if someone messes with you. hey dragonineye what part of Iran are you from? I have family who lives there.
