![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | A very knowledgable source explained Sambo to me as 75% Kodokan Judo and 25% leg locks so yes you could discuss it here or in the Japanese forum or the MMA forum.

![]() | I haven't found a place with real active sambo discussions. Maybe a judo board since they are so closely related. I am a member of the American Sambo Association and they have a board. Welcome to the American Sambo Association If you are interested the homepage will lead you to the board. i won't drop another forum address on a forum. I have had great difficulty finding a focused sambo board on train theories and such also. Best bet is networking and email and phone conversations. I have talked to the directors and president of the ASA on more than one occasion for help. It isn't a defined as Judo and leg locks. Sambo is an open system and they take effective techniques from many systems. They use alot of the judo throws but they have a little variation of some kind that makes is a tad different. I really like Sambo and it is one of my main focuses right now. When you get into the Sambo community they are really responsive I have found. |

![]() | Thanks for your reply Mike. I am based in the UK and mostly train Karate. However my instructor is good Friends with a Sports Sambo instructor and he comes and does an hour session once a week for anyone interested. I have been very impressed with it as a system although i am still very new to the art. The Sambo instructor is running a seminar at our club in august and is also inviting a combat Sambo specialist so should be good. |

![]() | According to what I have read and seen discussed I would say both and more. Sambo openly says in borrows and learns techniques from many sources. That is one thing that makes it great. It is an open style it has been from the start. Three distinct people of Sambo from Russia. Oshchepkov, Spiridonov, Kharlampiev. Oshchepkov was the first Russian and 4th European to recieve black belt ranking in Kodokan Judo from professor Jigoro Kano. 1921 he went to China as part of military and studied wushu. He also intergrated Russian and other native wrestling styles. He mixed a bunch of information. I know a lot of sambist also do Sanda from China also. Oshchepkov was declared a japanese spy because he had know ties to japan with Kano and wouldn't renounce the association. that is just a brief of one person. Scott Sonnen has some real good info as does Steven Koepher of the ASA @ Welcome to the American Sambo Association Sambo has information that is also hard to prove because if history doesn't suit who was in power it wasn't uncommon to try and erase it. |
