my old teacher went to pan am's with his brother a couple of times.(1993~1998)
he said south americains were the toughest
they tend to be on one feet on the floor and have devastating back kick. they basically hopped around on one leg.

Okay pan ams are the biggest sparring torniment with the exception of going Pro. there are state pan ams then nationals, so when you are there you will see close to 3 or 4 times more people then you do at small torniments. Pan ams are a way to see how good you are compared ot the rest of the worl. There are usely pan ams every summer or winter ther start state wide and people from other country will attend if you place top 8 you are asked to come to nationals top 4 there will get you an invite to try out for USA sparring team for the olympics. So in all pan ams are 1 of the harder torniments to win.

Currently in the USA, a player attends and must place at one of 6 USAT Regional Championships. This qualifies them to compete in the USAT National Championships (held in Cleveland, Ohio November this year, in a few days). Above the national championships, there are seperate Team Trails for events such as the Pan American Games, World Cup, World Championships, Pam American Taekwondo Championships and the Olympic Summer Games. Only the officially selected National Teams of member nations can compete in these official international games.

There is also a very difficult event to qualifiy your national teams spots for the Olympics called "Olympic Qualifiers", one held for the World, and one in each region of the IOC. Pan Am, Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceana.

Their is also a few Pan American Taekwondo Union Open events from time to time that is open to any Taekwondo competitor.

In the Pan American region, there are about 35 National Teams from Canada all the way to Chile. The Pan American Taekwondo Championships for this region is ran by the Pan American Taekwondo Union (PATU) www.PATU.org. The current President of this organization of the WTF is Dr. Cha Sok Park.
