Judo sucks, a black belt in judo is a blue belt in BJJ. I'm a blue belt
Judo sucks in what situation? It is considered to be a sport more than anything else. So saying that Judo sucks is like saying that tennis is a poor form of self defense.

I bet you wouldn't say that wrestling sucks, even tho it's a sport thru and thru.

And BJJ isn't worth a damn if you can't get a man on the ground.

Saying Judo sucks is saying that Jiu-jitsu sucks.

Not all brothers are equal. Judo from it's inseption was designed to be a sport. It's jiu jitsu "lite".

What is the difference between Judo and jujutsu?

Judo is the modern scientific application of selected jujutsu techniques that may be practiced for self-development, physical education and sport. Jujutsu retains more dangerous self defense techniques, while Judo can generally be practiced with full force and complete safety. Check this description of Judo by Jigoro Kano himself.
This Judo FAQ is intended to help a beginning Judo student understand some of the important concepts, terms, rank system, and history of Judo. It is not as

People try to say that BJJ is Judo because the count also learned judo. But IMHO BJJ is more like Tenshin Shinyo Ryu jiu jitsu.

          I agree.

          But Judo does not 'suck'.

I hardly think judo is BJJ lite, give me a break. Judo has many strengths over BJJ as BJJ has strengths over Judo.

              kid chocolate,

First of all i would noty say that "judo sucks", nor would i say that "any style sucks".

Where is the USA in world judo? Last, thats where. Where in BJJ? Second probably after Brazil. Perhaps thats why you have a high opinion of BJJ and a low opinion of judo?
You do have a point, but one must wonder why the japanese were so impressed with BJJ.

BJJ IS judo, only concentrating more on the ground and less on the standup, thats all.
No, BJJ is Jiu-Jitsu. Judo is a "sport form" of Jiu-jitsu .

Kimura (judo) vs Gracie (BJJ). Ring any bells?
First of all let's get this strait. The "Judo" that Kimura used is by no means the "judo" you see today. There are only a handful of schools in japan that teach the "old Judo". What Yoshida uses is not the same judo that Kimura used. Besides Helio defeated Kado and Yamaguchi refused to fight him. Imagine a 240lb (110kg),6th degree black belt ducking a man who weighed 140lbs. That's impressive. So he lost to a guy who outweighed him by a sick ammount. That does not take anything away from what he did against Kado and Yamaguchi.

Did I say that judo is BJJ lite? NO Judo is Jiu-jitsu lite as this quote says:

BJJ is a nother "Ryu" of Jiu-Jitsu. Judo has evolved into something that is different than Jiu-Jitsu.

                      re

can't be bothered going down to your level. You're convinced so whats the point in swapping propaganda? The facts are there if you really bother looking, but I guess you are a person who does his research on the internet, probably on the Gracie.com homepage. Good luck.

                            i did it

                            I said Judo sucks.

Reason I said it is because almost all judo people i've rolled with went out tapping. I think BJJ teaches more skills and it is more idealistic for self defense, not just throws and 30 seconds to do something on the ground (I'm not too sure on judo rules). IN hindsight I probably shouldnt have said it sucked, more like "I prefer BJJ over Judo." But I also think that you need to study more than 1 or 2 arts. 1 form of martial arts doesnt dominate the others.

I think BJJ and Judo have there place but to say which is better for SD is difficult. Ultimately, if you look at BJJ as the "groundfighting" art and judo as the standup grappling art I think Judo is superior in that it puts you in less at risk situations. Purely 1 on 1 yeah BJJ may be better but that doesn't mean judo is not effective.

Fusen Ryu Jujitsu was the only ryu to beat Judo after the kodokan started and it was all groundfighting. So the concept is definately not new. Before 1925 Judo incorporated alot more groundfighting and Kano Decided to restrict the groundfighting to make it more crowd pleasing. But as a note unlimited time limits may sound realistic, but IMHO and SD is quick and to the point you don't have 30-60 minutes to beat somone. That is the difference between sport stratgy and real fighting.
