My meeting with Guru Dan Inosanto, April of 1979.

During several trips to the Philippines, a friend and fellow student met Dan on our way to the Philippines in 1979. Dan had later purchased videos from me in 1987, and wowed the system we studied with Tuhon Gaje, Jr. He was especially intersted when he, Tom and I showed a little of the break in/out portions of the 64 attacks of Pekiti Tirsia System. And he (Dan) liked that as I recall, better then some other systems already nationwide in the US.

In 1981 after some talk in between the business of planning a tournament at the International School in NYC in October Dan, met with Tuhon Gaje and we worked some of the material with Dan at the Playboy Club in NJ as well, in those years Dan was getting alot of play on the system of Pekiti Tirsia and taught material from that and from other Filipino masters he met along the way. As I recall Pekiti Tirsia was part of several study Guru Dan made from seminars he provided for at the IMB Academy.

Dan spent extensive time with Tuhon Leo Tortal Gaje, Jr, and Master Emeritius Suryadi Jafri during those years up until 1981 as I recall. Jafri left for Indonesia around 1982 after Tuhon Gaje left for Texas. Those years I believe where enlightening for Guru, no Master, no, Grand, Great Grand Master Dan Inosanto, because Guru only means you have students, yet Dan was greatly responsible for the growth of Kali Silat world wide, and worked closely with Grand Master Dionisio Canete in later years, and as they both work the same schools in Europe and Australia as well.

Please see the download on interview with GM Canete at KaliSilat.com or on youtube.com. He mentions his association with Dan in ongoing programs they work and developed together from 1981ish to the present time. And it was Grand Master Canete that changed what was the new beginnings of Pekiti Tirsia, things changed drastically around 1989 when Doce Pares put up a tournament in Manila and in Cebu.

As for the scheme of things, it's not what you practice, but the methods you study, our website for information on, "Doce Methodos", what the Filipino keeps for themselves.

I will be talking about this and all of Kali Silat every Sunday 8:am to 12 Noon on talk radio, "The Arts of Kali Silat' at paltalk.com. My first topic some know, some will never know.

Guro Dan learned from many people. This weekend, I had the privilege of training with Art Miraflor who was visiting his daughter here in Houston, Texas. Art is one of Angel Cabales' original students in Serrada Esrima and also trained with Leo Giron from whom he learned the De Fondo style.

Art was telling me about when "Danny" Inosanto first came down from Los Angeles to Stockton to train with Angel. Of course, Guro Dan's family lived in Stockton, CA, where many Grand Masters lived just a stone's throw away from each other. They would meet in a local park to practice and share ideas. I have visited the park . . . sacred ground in my opinion.
