  • Tournament....

    Hello Brothers in Arms,

Just want to ask input as to anybody's reaction either positive or negative regarding WEKAF here in the US......

    Leo,

There is no doubt that WEKAF to this date holds the limelight for FMA tournaments. They draw the largest participation simply because they were in the forefront of promoting Arnis from a sport competition level. The venue is a good start for those who enjoy sport competition and want trophies/medals. And for those who are not ready or do not wish to partake in a DBMA style event.

I don't think limited armor, live stick venues will grow in the same popularity because it is limited to practitioners who are willing to do it. However, I do know that several parties involved in heading WEKAF in the U.S. are considering experimenting with the idea of limmited armor.

Training between or within the same group or system has its limitations, so venues such as WEKAF, DBMA, Arnis PI etc. are a great way to meet fellow enthusiasts and test your skill.

While it's far from a real fight, sparring in such events is essential as an FMA player or martial artist in general.

I admit to have slammed WEKAF in quite a few posts, but I almost must point out everything I find to be positive about the federation. First of all, it is really not my place to talk about WEKAF the way I have because I am not nor was ever part of the federation and for many obvious reasons, probably never will be. My views were made as an outsider looking in, and I can't deny myself the right to express my opinion as honestly as possible, even if it seemed harsh.

Off the top of my head as I am typing this.. First of all, I believe that WEKAF is a positive move for the children in FMA. I think that IF (and that's a big IF)... I were teaching children's classes in a school full-time, and if the majority of them expressed the desire to compete in stickfighting tournaments, then I may consider signing up to join WEKAF ....but ONLY for the children. I also think the safety gear is great for kids, but once again it would be because it is most appropriate for matching the safety concerns for kids because their bodies are still very soft and are still developing.

WEKAF is the place to be if you believe in forms/sayaw. I do enjoy watching some forms, but it also depends on the person too.

      That's all for now.

Johnj and Danny..your input is very much helpful. I have not seen WEKAF here in the US yet, the reason i asked this inquiry is to facilitate some of the practitioners i train and train with in opening up this aspect of Arnis. i was contacted by the current president of NARAPHIL and we had a long good talk....one of my agenda why i try to propagate the MA i love is for Metro Houston to be a point of reference when people look for Arnis-Kali-Escrima- and FMA. The first part has been established through HSFA and i do agree with you Dan..that WEKAF is good for kids--may i add either kids in physique or kids in the art., Again my thanks...

If anyone here has participated in a WEKAF tournament..I would love and appreciate to hear inputs from you as well.
