I will check out alot of these, I just bought a Maxam folder with a release button, not a switchblade though for $3.00! Another instructor in my school picked one up in Nevada and I liked the weight and feel, with the button pushed, the blade just about falls open, very easy and quick. My only concern may be the lock, but for $3 I'm willing to try it.

Yes, that is a baaad folder. Check out the crkt prowler, second time I said it, but I'm serious......IT IS CRUEL!!

Check out the new Benchmade "Griptilian 550". I have it and the trainers. I used to be a freak for the Spyderco, but they can fail in combat. I travel and teach the Tac-Folder to law enforcement, and it is the one that was designed for DIRE situations.

S&W is the only co. listed that I don't like. Their folders are just not built to sustain pressure or impact. If I buy a knife for defense, it has to be strong and sturdy. I really prefer fixed blades over folders because you don't have to open them and since they are just made of one to four peices, they are very durable. The whole Ken Onion series made by Kershaw is great. I really like the scallion. CRKT makes a Casper that slides open like there is a ghost touching it. This is because the blade is nearly 1/4" thick in back. It is 50/50 serrated/straight and has a legal length. The only thing is if you clip it in your pocket you better wear a belt. This thing weighs a lot. I like a heavier knife, they just have more impact. They also make a fixed blade version, both run around 40-60$$.
I think the most I can narrow down the spectrum of BEST folder Co. to is Boker, Benchmade, CRKT, and Kershaw. I have never held a Spyderco that felt really strong. If anyone knows of any sturdy folders, post names or pictures. I am always looking for the perfect blade for me. I feel the weapon one uses(even improvised weapons) should evolve with the fighter. As I learn more about my limitations in combat I also learn the limitations of the weapons I use.
My jujitsu/JKD teacher has a BAAAAAD folder, but I don't remember the name or CO. offhand. It is very thick, about a 3 1/2" blade, and has an odd looking bloodgroove going up the back. If anyone knows what this is post it if I haven't asked him about it and posted its name. I think it is the best legal length folder I have seen. It has an amzing grip. This thing is made to perform a full-force stab, but it also has a really nice edge.

My choices in order of preference: Benchmade Griptilian, Kershaw talon, and CRKT M16Z.
Do be ware of serrated edges. I got this scar 3 years ago after my M16Z bounced off a metal plate while cutting tie straps (it bounced a good 8in).

I too am a big Benchmade fan but unfortunetly my budget will only allow me to settle with my second favorite.
Maxam folding knives. They are cheap yet reliable and at five dollars a pop for a basic folder I couldn't complain. Benchmade makes some awesome blades with neat little attributes like different steels to choose from and also different blade coatings. My friend carries a benchmade and I will never forgive him for buying one before I ever got the chance.

I carry a folder but well and truley, if it's pointy and sharp, draws blood when I slash and goes in when I stick somebody with it - I'm a happy chappy.
Well....not really happy, I never want to have to do that to somebody - but u get the picture
For me, I just focus on the techniques involved in knife fighting and understand that the principles can be applied to any small weapon - bottle, hair brush, even a pen. For me the knife is really a deflecting weapon and a hard object with which to cause enough pain in my enemy to make him submit. Any killing or maiming that has to be done, I can do with my hands.
BUT ANYWAY......that's another subject.
I think all those folders are good, good quality materials used.
Train well guys!
Keeper

INFIGHTER,
That is the knife I carry, but the aluminum handled one. I have seen it recommended in several LE magazines for tactical/SWAT use. It is very sharp, has a very strong blade lock, feels great in the hands and has good weight. Watch out for the schraeded(sp?) edge though! It's a meat slicer/dicer

Spyderco's are good and relatively inexpensice. Dieter CQD is excellent--check up on it.
