I joined this discussion with one purpose; to debunk Homoplata's view of belting. I belted in TKD many years ago and have friends that have belted in BJJ. We have trained together for years. We have added Muay T, Judo & MMA to our arsenal. We have competed in competitions and either knocked out or submitted every opponent. None of us have belted since the beginning. We have beaten many belted opponents. Statements such as yours belittle the sport and cheapen the arts. It truly is the level at which a person performs that measures their success. It is definitley not their clothing!

You dont need to be a bjj, to tumble and submit. You dont need to be a boxer to fight, it just the way it is.
    also,
The guy did say he basically tapped a black belt when he was a white belt, while it has happened, usually with a choke of some sort with the GI getting tangled, the odds are 1-1000 at best of it happening, at best.

Due to inexperience I let it go because I wasn't sure if he would have tapped and I didn't want to drain my energy and he escaped and tapped me. We never rolled after that. And he's no push over. I won't mention his name but if you googled it you would get a lot of hits. After that I have worked no-gi only for MMA. The point is that belts don't really matter.
This is a crock of bullshit if the ever was one, lol, you tapped the instructor and several blue belts, ookkkkkkk, and who is the instructor???lmao . And yes, the belts matter, and no, you cant tap a black belt, not once in a 1000 times if youre a white belt. PERIOD.

Thats my teachings exactly. I and my students train to fight, to see what works and never exlude anything from possible use. We will not put names to things that do not exist(techniques). Fighting can only be learned from fighting, and belt dont give you that. Some people believe that martial arts is more than fighting or concern themselves with more than fighting, I believe this to be true but fighting is a major component. I think a martial artist can never be complete unless he can deal with conflict. I dont just mean throw some techs and beat the man, it means dealing with the emotions of a sittuation. Ive seen so called experts beaten by a aggressive loose canon. He is not a martial artist but live a warrior life. he lives with the risk, and deals with the concequences.

Ah, so the 'West' 'created' the belt system?

    wow

Man you guys get a bit frustrating to listen to dudes, why do you call people names who you dont even know, whats the point?

The guy who made a comment about, what you know and do in bjj shows your level. This is true and makes perfect sense, belts dont realy matter its who gives you them. I have a Bjj class down the road from me, which has students from my local area. The blackbelt that jim down the road gives, doesnt mean as much a say Carlos Gracie(rip) now does it. I had my blackbelt when I was young, but looking back I was rubbish. Ive trained or 7 years since then, in various systems and have became far better. The journey to get the belt is more important than the belt, where I train the blackbelt is just he begining. I train lots of bb in vale tudo, and mma, and using their ideas to help me also. Belts are something the west needed to create in order to "rationalize" or compartmentise everything. Traditionaly, the white belt would become dirty over the years, eventualy becoming black. There wer no other belt colours. In china, sifu would sometimes have a gold sash.

i think the belts mean more if you don't mix in the striking and everything else.
