Of course, George Burns smoked cigars. I guess Clinton is destined to live to 100. But I think the Grim Reaper should deduct 20 years for Hillary.

Just DO IT
What are you waiting for?
You know, I've been injured more times than I can count. Knee, spine, etc..
Serious trauma will heal or it will leave you lame for life. Adapt.
It may seem odd but a number of "doctors" are surprisingly ignorant or complacent when it comes to sport injury. I played with a broken arm... For a few weeks before they even took an X ray...
They put a cast on it and I played some more...
Learn to TAP OUT. FAST! inform your fellow students of the injury and play nice.
If you're not afraid to get back on your bike don't be afraid to try the judo.

Separated shoulder and BJJ

I'm really eager to try BJJ, but in May I separated my shoulder falling off my bike. I'm working on physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around there, but do you think this rules me out of BJJ?

In addition to George Burns, you forgot Mr. Burns from the Simpsons whose 100 somethnig. I don't think he works out or smokes either?Originally posted by KickNit View PostIf I was Jack Lalanne I'd work out too. Interestly, cigar smoking George Burns lived to 100 and I don't think he ever worked out. It just goes to show, if you want to live to a ripe old age you should either work out or smoke like a chimney.

Of course. I once saw Jack on a television show recently (can't remember which one) and he was as excited as a hormone-prone teenage boy when he talked about his wife.Originally posted by Laura View PostBTW, Jack turned 93 on September 23rd - and he says his wife smiles with good reason - make of it what you will....
He still works out 2 hours a day (at 93), spending 1.5 hours with weights and 30 minutes in the pool...
I can't speak for all dudes, but after a decent workout I feel invigorated....to say the least.Last edited by Tom Yum; 10-18-2007, 05:33 PM.

That's one of the first things I learned in Japanese Jujitsu; how to fall properly. Hopefully BJJ will teach you how to fall also. Nope, never heard of Indian Clubs but my resistance band exercises worked wonders.Originally posted by simonboyce View PostHardball - that's a very good point, about falling properly. Thanks for pointing that out. I don't plan to give up mountain biking, and falling off comes with the territory. Soon as my shoulder feels solid, i'll give BJJ a try.
One other thing - have you come across Indian Clubs? It's a kind of exercise that's supposed to be really good for shoulders.

Also, BJJ should teach you how to fall properly just in case you fall off of your bike again.
