Pedicures and MA By MidnightBlue - 06-01-2011 07:30 AM

Hi, ladies,
I've recently come back to the martial arts world and joined these forums. I'm thrilled to see a place for conversing with women, and I'm thrilled that it seems we women can post about all sorts of issues on our minds here.
Let me give you all a little background on myself, partly since I'm new here and partly because it leads into my question. I trained (in several arts at first, then picked and stuck with Tang Soo Do) from the time I was a little girl until I was around 20, and then I taught classes and helped out at my do jang for about a year. During this last year, I was unable to train because I had suffered two knee injuries. Then, I moved a few hundred miles away to kick off my career. During the past five to six years, I have had absolutely zero training and not really even worked out, as I was dedicating myself entirely to climbing in my career while attending grad school half time.
However, during these past years, I've also taken to getting myself regular pedis and manis, feeling they made me look more professional (and feel great, of course!). Now, I happen to really like having my toenails painted, but I also value conditioning my hands and feet... especially my feet. I remember the way my calluses use to build up, sometimes tear off, then build up again, but even when they tore off, I still had much tougher feet. Today marks the third week since I've been back in MA. Yesterday, I sat in the pedi chair and noted the woman frowning at the dead skin built up on my feet. I didn't say anything while she razored and scrubbed it off in an attempt to make my feet soft and ladylike, but it did occur to me that clearing off this dead skin will NOT help me condition the skin on my feet. Of course, I know conditioning is more than just on the surface, literally.
My question is, how do you all feel about pedicures? Do you get them regularly? Only on special occasions? Never? How do you feel about conditioning your feet (and hands, but I'm mostly curious about feet) in terms of your art... but also in terms of your careers?
I'd love to know your thoughts, ladies.
Have a good day!
