Seeking women martial artists' thoughts on the media's portrayal of women martial artists By lifespantkd - 04-06-2012 09:13 PM

Ladies, I'm interested in what you think about the media's portrayal of women martial artists, including their portrayal in:
1. Websites (including discussion boards, martial arts schools, blogs, etc.)
2. Martial arts supply catalogs
3. Books on martial arts instruction or fiction or ....
4. Film/TV programs/youtube clips/instructional videos/....
5. Magazines (in print or electronic)
6. Marketing anywhere in any form by any source for any product or service related to the martial arts (supplies, tournaments, seminars, classes, movies, anything at all)
7. Any other media I haven't mentioned
Specifically, what messages do you think the media's portrayal of women martial artists is sending to the reader/viewer? If you think the messages vary, please give examples of that variation and assess what the dominant message or what common trends are, if you think there is a dominant message or a common trend. Does the media's portrayal of women martial artists vary depend on the art (i.e., do women tend to be portrayed in one manner in one art and in another manner in another art or is the portrayal similar across arts)? If so, how? Do you think these media messages are a correct representation of women martial artists? What impact do you think these portrayals and their inherent messages have on female readers/viewers (of various arts, ages, and degree of training [from none to the highest level of the art])? Do they help (established/potential/older/younger) women martial artists or cause them harm or have no impact? How? What impact do you think these portrayals and their inherent messages have on male readers/viewers? If you can, please share reference to media samples (e.g., book titles, films, websites, specific webpages) that helps us better understand what you are seeing, where you are seeing it, and your analysis of it.
Gentlemen, you are most welcome to "listen in" if you are interested (and thank you very much for your interest!), but please allow women martial artists to have this conversation among themselves. I will start a follow up post for any interested men martial artists to share their insights after this conversation by women is concluded. Thank you for your understanding.
Thank you in advance for your input!
Cynthia
