    Its me again!

I was doing a few drills last night and was wondering what type of drills do you use to improve your combative skills and fitness AND the benefits from using them?

    DRILL:

I practice my bobbing, rolling, ducking and weaving by getting a partner to thrust a pole at my head and I avoid it. This type of drill is great, after alot of practice it become easy and natural.

It develops a thing called Muscle Memory. Muscle Memory is when you will instintlivey react to a attack using a techniques already practiced.

As the Great Late Bruce Lee said

"Where the opponent expand I contract
Where the opponent contract I expand
and when there is an opportunity I do not hit it hits all by itself"

muscles dont really remember anything, they just turn 'on' and 'off' - sometimes there is residue tension, but not memory. What your really doing is training the neurological pathways - the connectors in your brain and from the brain to the muscle, by sending the same message over and over again - eventually the body and brain get more effecient at communicating and interpreting that message so it takes less and less letters to make whole sentances and paragraphs. 'Muscle memory' is a good way to think about that, however

            My Drill:

            partner required:

turn the lights off, take up fighting stance, partner turns on flashlight and you turn (line up with the light on the wall or whatever) and then throw whatever combo your working on.

you can be very creative with this. every time he shines it on the post, you do a hook cross hook cross, every time on the picture of bruce lee, jab cross hook, on the garage door, jab jab cross uppercut, etc, etc.

You can also do similar 'drills' while watching tv. Every time the scene changes do a combo, etc.

that's kind of obsessive to me. I leave my drills to the classes.
My sensei did a similar drill, but instead of a pole, we used balls. I'm not really into head injury.

I've seen those guys do that to, but it's not about "iron skin", it's more about meditation and relaxation. They get into such a deeply relaxed state that the body just kind of goes over the spear. It's hard to explain but this is how they walk over fire and shit.

                  this is intresting

lol, relaxation has nothing to do with fire walking, its just the way the heat is transfered to your foot to the wood, for example water burns your skin at a lower temperature then metal.

at the place that i train, we practice hitting different parts of the body, by exhailing at the point of impact and inhailing through your nose and then exhailing quickly and powerfully it greatly diminishes the time that you feel the effect of the puches. as well by exhailing at the time that the punch impacts it help your body to go with the punch, and with breathing very quickly ignore the effect of it, some peolpe can just stand there and take punchs to the zyphoid process (stomach) for quite a long time. im not sure what we use for head/neck shots, but im sure its a similar process. om not advanced enough to really be able to teach it properly i dont think, but its not that complicated. you can even escape from some one grabing, a headlock for example you just by relaxing and steping away (a little more to it then that of course)

it would be hard to get the feeling of it from what iv typed, but its sort of like inhailing to the spot of the pain and then exhailing it out.

learning not to tense up at a puch is usefull i think.

im not sure if i explained it as well as i wanted, but i think you can understand what im trying to say.

                  thanks.

The 2 drills im using at the moment are:

                    Enter the Dragon

You need a partner for this, like in the film where bruce lee fights bob wall. Put your wrist on the back of your partners wrist, and you have to try and hit you partner before they hit you. If they strike first you block and vice versu. Try doing it without moving your legs, theres are many variations. This will teach you to aticipate the other figthers movemnets and improve you speed, as well as being great fun

                    Rope Bobbing

I do this on my own. I use a rope and fix it so its about up to my chest height off the floor. Then you proceed to do you your drills bobbing under and up each side of the rope. You can just move as quick as possbile or put an upercut or hook in there to.

Wow! That's amazing at the amount of technique training drills many of you do. But I need to start focusing on technique too, so maybe I should start paying attention and try to better understand what you people are tlaking about.
