  • How's your club doing?

    Hi all,

I've been running an academy with my training partner for 16 months now (BJJ), and things are going well. But I'm aware that even though the art is growing fast, it's not as popular as other arts such as karate & TKD (LA & Rio might be exceptions to the rule there). It's also difficult to get a benchmark as to a realistic level of growth/survivability in this economic climate. So...

    1. What style of MA do you teach?

    2. What country is your club in?

    3. Is it a full-time academy, or part-time?

    4. How long has your club been running?

    5. How many enrolled, monthly paying students do you have?

    6. How much do you charge per month?

    7. Do you know what your break even point is in terms of number of students? (to cover all outgoings excluding instructors wages)

    8. How many scheduled group classes do you run a week?

    9. What is the most important lesson you've learned?

I realise some of you may not want to answer some of these questions, so feel free to leave those answers blank, there's no need to name your club. This isn't a marketing ploy of any sort, I just want to get an idea of how growth varies across arts, and to identify if my outgoings are average for the sector etc.

    I'll start...

    1. BJJ
    2. Africa
    3. Fulltime
    4. 16 months
    5. 130
    6. $38/mth for 2 x weekly, or $53/mth for unlimited classes (this is africa!)
    7. About 80 students
    8. 20 x 1 hour classes
    9. To get a balance between 'club atmosphere' and a business.

I have very little overhead costs seeing I have a home Kwoon/Dojo. I turned my garage into a martial art gym.

    8. How many scheduled group classes do you run a week? I cater to when my students want or can train. I teach private lesson to groups of 3 or less. It's kinda like by appointment.

    9. What is the most important lesson you've learned? Be patient with the students. Especially when learning a new form/kata
