    has to be the style

bruce would win because all he has been through more.

ali wouldnt even have a chance to do anything.

first of all the boxing in the usa is different than the boxing bruce knows.

Ali only knows what his trainer taught him nothing else.

Bruce knows more because he made his own art jkd which is the way u

express yourself not like those other styles where you express just that

    particular style.

In a boxing match, Ali would win by KO within 10 minutes.
In a street fight, Lee would have a much better chance being able to kick and grapple (allthough his grappling was considered so-so & Ali would be 60lbs heavier ).

Kareem Abdul Jabbar was 2 x as tall as Lee and had difficulty catching him, but Jabbar wasn't a surgically precise boxer like Ali and is less mobile.

      ....this thread is ancient.

just to make absolutely sure everyone gets this I'm going to write it in caps: BRUCE LEE HIMSELF SAID HE COULD NOT BEAT ALI IN A BOXING MATCH, WHAT THE HELL MAKES YOU THINK THAT HE COULD IF HE HIMSELF KNEW HE COULD NOT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???!?!?!??!?!

here's my theory on the lee supporters in this scenario. street fighter 2 for super NES had a big black boxing character. everyone knows he was the worst choice for that game cause all he did was duck and punch. Chun Li could do her whacky spin BS and destroy the boxer dude. "Oh my god, bruce lee could so 'savrugan' ali." that's the parallel i draw when i try to understand how someone could possibly think that bruce lee could kick ali's ass in a regulation boxing match.

                Ali vs Lee?

Hey Shadowkiller. where did you hear that Ali and Bruce fought? unless you're pulling my leg, I'd like to know where you got the info.

At any rate, if Bruce would have been stupid enough to jump in the ring with the Heavy weight champ who had THE fastest hands, in the Heavyweight division, not to mention legendary stamana, ring generalship and mobility, Bruce would have been leveled EARLY in the fight.

Guys, as much as we all love Bruce, size DOES matter. This is exactly why there ARE weight divisions in boxing.

To take a "real life" case in point, I remember reading Sugar Ray Robinson's autobiography several years ago where he told an interesting story about a fight he had with his roomie, then reigning heavyweight champ, Joe Louis. Without question, Robinson was a masterful boxer possessing superior handspeed, exceptional mobility adn decent power. Joe Louis...well....They dont call him the brown bomber for nothin. He was reported as needing only six inches of space to knock you out.
Getting back to the story, Both Joe, and Ray were good friends who often roomed with each other when they fought on the road. Both men also shared a passion for coca cola. So much so, that Robinson claims he had to hide his stash from Joe to keep him from drinking it. One day, Joe finds the stash, Robinson protests, Joe laughs, Robinson hits Joe, Joe hits Robinson.....Robinson wakes up a few minutes later and realizes WHY they have weight divisions in boxing.

Thank you!!! Bruce was a great fighter, but he was NOT a great boxer. And remember this is a post pertaining to BOXING. This is like saying Tiger Woods going into baseball and would be the best damn hitter ever. Tiger Woods is absolutely fucking amazing at golf, much like bruce lee was at martial arts. But as a baseball hitter, Tiger Woods would not be able to even hold a candle to (I'm not a big baseball fan so I'll just pick a name) Barry Bonds. This is the same thing. Muhammed Ali is one of the greatest boxers to have ever lived. While Bruce Lee, though still no less amazing, would be insane to ever think he could beat Ali in a boxing match.

I don't think Bruce would have a chance. Not under boxing rules anyway.
I've read about Bruce having a hard punch. I've also spoken to martial artists who have met him and seen what he can do. He was fast. Very agile and excellent at broken rhythm movement. Bruce was not however the unbeatable icon that many of you are writing about.

Ali never fought Bruce and to my knowledge he didn't fight a Gracie either. I know Ali studied with Dillman for a while and stated that he could not beat a skilled karate man due to his lack of weapons(legs, knees, elbows and grappling skills). While Bruce may have been stronger than a better-than-average man his size, he still was not in the striking league with skilled, big men heavy hitters like heavyweight boxers.

I too agree that Bruce could have beaten Ali if the fight would have gotten into CQ range, but only because of the skills Ali DIDN'T train in. Well, he didn't train in them enough to be very proficient at them(Remember he trained with Dillman a bit).

And as far as the comment that stated:

"Ali only knows what his trainer taught him nothing else.

Bruce knows more because he made his own art jkd which is the way u

express yourself not like those other styles where you express just that

                            particular style."...

Many people create styles everyday. Students leave their dojos all the time and come up with "John Doe Jitsu", just to say its their own. Ali was a champion calibur boxer. While being a black belt or red sash is a terrific accomplishment, its easier to earn a belt or sash than it is to win a professional title. There are millions of black belts. There are less than a hundred top calibur boxers in the world fighting in any given era. Trust me, if ANY black belt, Bruce included, thought he could waltz in the ring and knock out a champion and take home a million dollars, it would be happening all the time.

As much as I respect what Bruce did and you all worship his legacy, he wasn't the invincible fighter so many seem to think he was. Gene Lebell literally put a hurtin' on him, because Bruce had no idea how to grapple on that level, and that info is commonly known which leads me to believe that most of you are very young. Norris taught Lee how to kick high, as Lee wasn't accustomed to that coming from Wing Chun. And while Bruce learned what he was taught well and fast, he still wasn't supernatural.

To tell the truth, without a lot of throat or d!ck shots, I can't even see Bruce lasting in today's K1. The best big man will ALWAYS beat the best little man.

On a last note, I'm curious as to how many of you know Bruce was a great fighter. Were you there? Did you see him fight or did you just see a demonstration? I know many of you have read the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, but how many authors would write anything unflattering about an idea they were trying to sell? Who has Bruce fought, and what did he do in those fights that lead all of you to believe that he could beat anyone outside the rules of boxing or pure grappling? I personally love his philosophies, but not the way legions exaggerate what he was, and therefore create critics who then discuss what Lee wasn't instead of what he did for the martial arts community.

                            Anyway, that my 2 cents.

                            Take care, guys

He's probably referring to me, Handtohand. He's stating that he didn't have to "be there" to know something. I had previously stated that many blind Bruce worshippers take stories from anyone as gospel, when they had never seen Bruce fight, train or otherwise.

My stance is that movies are NOT credible sources for basing an opinion of a man's fighting prowess, unless the footage is fight footage from actual matches. I do not doubt that Bruce was great at what he did, as most fanatics are. However, if you do not see or experience something, every statement you make regarding it is a theory, not a fact. If you've never fought him or seen him fight or you've never let him hit you, no respect intended but that makes you a story teller. Repeating what you've heard in order to strengthen what you want yourself and others to believe.

Again, there is no doubt in my mind that Bruce Lee had the largest impact on martial arts in the last century. He gave many the desire to want to train, as well as brought what was little known to the eyes of millions. He was very fast, although not the fastest as Bruce himself stated that Steve Muhammed had the fastest hands he's ever seen, even faster than his own. He wasn't the best grappler, as Gene Lebell is well known for having put Lee in his place with one of his infamous "grappling sessions", where Lee could do nothing but submit.

Most individuals who discuss Lee never met the man, but claim to know his style and ideas intimately. While Inosanto trained whith Lee, he isn't Lee and no one has ever claimed he was any where near Lee's skill. He's not even Lee's closest or most senior student. As a matter of fact, Lee told Inosanto that he didn't see the practical application of what Inosanto had previously studied(Phillipino Martial Arts), and even advised him to let it go. Yet nearly EVERY JKD practitioner studies arnis/escrima/kali, which shows that today's JKD is more a product of Inosanto's vision than Lee's.

Now before you start yelling about the JKD philosophy, I am well aware of it. However, I am still intelligent enough to realize that if the founder didn't want Phillipino traditional arts put in JKD, it shouldn't be a part of it.

The root of this conversation was could Bruce beat Ali using only boxing rules, and my answer is no. Unless the myth about Lee having "secret" techniques like the floating punch that he supposedly never passed down is true, its highly unlikely.

I said it before and I'll say it again: If a martial artist could waltz in a MMA event and use a secret technique to flatten all of his opponents and make a quick $100,000 for each event, we'd have seen that by now. Now could you imagine if that same martial artist could perform the same technique while wearing boxing gloves? If he fought Mike Tyson and won he'd make over $10 million for the match and the rematch. Budo or no Budo, we can all use some extra change at times, and as I said we'd have seen something, even if it was just a glimpse, by now. Not to say that there isn't another level to be reached, but that no one but a dedicated, fanatical type student will have a chance of reaching it. I know some of the students of Wei Hong, the Black Tiger Claw master have reached those levels and their grips and clawing techniques are amazing. However, its after years and years of dilligent practice. Bruce Lee studied with Yip Man for about 2 years. How much could he have learned in 2 years from a man who spent his life perfecting his skills?
Lee took from other arts because his study in his original one was incomplete.
He was great at using what he knew though.

                                Peace
