  • Olympic boxing anyone been watching?

Seen Englands own Amir Khan? just 17 y/old and romping through his weight class. Stopped the Korean entrant in 1m10sec of first round, think he was ranked 5th in the world.

Been some good bouts, but he's the only name I recall (as he is from the same town as me)

That kid will be a sensation, as long as his family help him keep his feet on the ground.

He's from Bolton, about 9 miles from me. Everyone here is very proud of the lad.

I'm near to Wigan. I train alone at the moment in my purpose built Garage Gym, but will soon start training at 2 different local clubs (one a MMA club in Leigh and one a Combatives club in Liverpool). Basically I do impact and fitness training.

I'll post more details of the clubs if I decide to stay. What about you?

Tongpo, i have been following the Olympic Boxing quite keenly and have also enjoyed seeing Khan do so well, I havent actually watched much amateur boxing before and must say that in some of the bouts, they do seem very 'stiff limbed' compared to the pros, am i right or am i seeing things?, i guess that its down to being relaxed and the fact that the pros just do it so much more frequently.

If you and ThaiBri are in or near bolton, havent you tried training at Sandy Holts' Gym???, or at Elite (Nigel Ashtons gym)??, just curious as i believe they are very good for Muay Thai.....

Sandy Holt is well known and very dedicated. Unfortunately he had a habit of posing around town, doing silly posey kicks and things.

Made himself look a prize prick on numerous occasions.......

                Olympic Boxing

The Cubans and Thais seem to have the light weight and below. The American's have the lightheavyweight and the Russians have the cruiser weight and heavyweights.

China took home its first medal in boxing in the flyweight division.

This guy is serious. He took out the American during the first day (AP Photo), the Romanian, Ethiopian and even outscored Amir Khan but got shutout of the silver by the reputable Cuban fighter.

The Olympics as a whole have been interesting.

The women's 4 x 400 showed India and Russia in close competition with the American women's team. That Chinese guy won the gold for the 110m hurdles. The Basketball Dream team got smoked by Argentina. Huge controversy in gymnastics from a flawless performance by the Russian and unfair score. Its been a fascinating olympics!

Thai Bri, i guess that doesn't surprise me (re Sandy Holt) in view of the amount of self promotion that he does (on a well known kickboxing forum site), does seem a tad leary. I havent met him but do get a strong impression that what you say is no doubt true.
No big deal, i was just curious as I have done a lot of looking around for Gyms/MA clubs.
On another note, it seems that Bolton is very well catered for with MA's/Boxing etc, compared to other places in the uK, especially where I live, i have to travel 30 miles to get to my nearest Boxing Gym.

I didn't witness it myself, but colleagues have. He made a fool of himself often enough.

Anyway, Khan got a lesson in boxing today. The best man won.

Bolton Thai Boxing is Sandy Holt's

He is a bit of a character, he wouldn't deny that himself. But he is a good trainer and was a good fighter. His 'self promotion' - well he's promoting a minority sport in Muay Thai, and maybe he's the reason there are so many clubs in the Bolton area. He has made it well known. Can't blame the guy for being succesful.
