what do u guys think of using the hammer fist from the boxing fighting stance? when u are in ur fighting stance for boxing , or mt, ur hand is in perfect position to deliver a fast hammer fist to ur opponents nose/face. with gloves on it probobly wouldnt be that great, but without gloves it seems like it would work really well. what u guys think ?

Thumbs up
I'm a big fan of hammer fists. They were used by bareknuckle boxers, known as "chopper fists." Hammer fist striking is very biomechanically natural for humans and other primates. It's how apes strike. They work well from an on-guard position. they work well on the ground too. Hammer fists are close range tools. They're good for pre-emptive striking in a self defense context if delivered to the proper targets. They may be hard to fire from the outside ranges. The targets for chopper fists are plentiful. For example, you can use them to hammer on wrists of grasping hand. The risk of injury to the hand is less than knuckle punching too. Just be careful to not strike with your wrist or pinky finger. Like anything they deserve practice.

Hammer Fist
Right on Shoot. I'm a huge fan of the hammer fist. It seems to be a lot more effective for a larger guy though. It relies more on power than on technique, but I trained at MMA schools that work it. It's main advantage in mma is thats it's harder to get armbared using it instead of a traditional punch.

I have hard conditioned knuckles from years of makawari and heavy bag work, thus personally I only use hammer fist as a reverse strike when someone grabs me from the rear. I usually aim it for their groin. (Of course). A little off the subject but I also like to do hammerfist curls with dumbbells.

I get so tired of hearing all of this crap about "Hurting your Hands". When are these modern day martial artists gonna get down to the basics. One of the first things a true warrior teaches his students/disciples is to "Condition your hands". Karate has the makawari, kung fu has the iron fist with it's secret conditioning formula and boxing has it's heavy bag workout.
Please don't take this personal, I'm just venting!!!

I have this friend and he is a very large guy.
He's about 6'6" 275. He's tall, fat, and just overall genetically large.
He's not a fighter, in fact he's probably the nicest person you'd ever meet.
We were in a bar brawl one night, and he was just knocking people out (forman style) with hammer fists directly down on top of peoples heads. These guys would just bounce up off the floor and land KO'd. He knocked out 3 people in a row like this. Gotta say, I was impressed. I know I don't have the size to do that, but they worked great.
