Duty to retreat LOL, just because you run away from someone doesn't mean they won't run after you and start attacking you again then you'll be out of breath if you have to run some distance and be fatigued and less able to defend yourself. This situation happend to me when I was a teen ager and didn't like to fight like I do now. AND don't give me lectures on running 3-6 or more miles a day for areobic conditioning,as many non-martial arts people are either unwilling or physically unable to run very fast or a great distance.
But BWG, this is a MA forum. So I assume we are all into MA. And thus we are all training and conditioning. So it would actually be to your advantage (assuming you do running) to run away and have your attacker chase you (and get winded) then deal with him than to simple take him from a rested position. And man, don't forget to call the cops for help. When that occurs (assuming you have the time, like after your sprint away from bodily harm) then every action will have been taken and you won't even have to fight.

One more thing about a street fight. Sometimes people have bad days, are drunk, or want to look tough or whatever. That could make them an asshole. But these people have mothers, girlfriends, friends, and lives. Don't screw with somebody elses life (or even take it) just because they made the mistake of picking a fight with you unless you absolutely have to. Exhaust all other options first. Cause you never know when it will be you having the bad day making stupid mistakes.... karma.

yes we are martial artists BTW many martial artists either don't belive in running or can no longer run because of injuries form the ring/training(I belive everybody who isn't injured in some way is at least capable of sprinting a short distance) also what about running on ice or snow or on wet pavement or muddy pavement if you slip and injure your anlke then you're on the ground and going to get stomped.I haven't been able to run for a few years and may or may not depending on how successful my potental surgerys go. So running ain't an option

If running isn't an option then figure out all the options you have and use them. Different situations call for different options. If you were cornered in a bathroom and one+ person is advancing I would think your options are 1) to talk your way out of it or 2) take him out. If you are in Minn and the ground is icy then you can't run. So you really need to set your limits as to what you will allow to happen, what you can do, and when you will defend yourself.

Also, besides running, try swimming (if you are able). Running is a good workout, no doubt about it, but I believe swimming is just as good. It is a complete workout and also works your lungs for extended periods without breath (anarobic?).

P.S. Thanks for the thread, it's made me reconsider some things and actually think.

thanks for the thoughts, I know that swimming is good but the only pool I have access to is too small for swimming laps,BTW Thinking then trying to apply is the way in which all tactics are proven or disproven. There is just so much B.S. concerning self-defense out there and functional MA only gives you some tools not the experience of the street so the ring and the gym is all we have.Trial and error via ring fighting and eat/sleep/ train.

A highly trained fighter that can take some shots has a better chance than someone who doesn't know anything I think, so you either gain experience in the ring or in the street(which may involve getting seriously injured or killed or going to jail)

I think that the straight blast gyms have the right mindset for training. They stress aliveness, plenty of sparring, and King stresses spending one day a week on heavy sparring - that should be plenty to get you ready for the streets.

For the street, really be aware of the sucker punch, especially if the guy turns his back or starts to (even if they are concillatory) step back into rim shot range, sidestep away if you don't have room and have your hands up. Never take your eyes off a potential opponent or focus solely on the person right in front of you because the sucker punch can come from either side too. I wish there were some way to train that, but really if you start training for it - it is bogus because you are expecting it to come. Unless you and your friends make a pact to at any random point just punch either when the other person is distracted (that makes you pretty wired and ingrain mistrust and awareness into you or lose you friends and/or teeth ).

                to people's champ

thx, I know all that stuff and I like Rodney and S.B.G.I. I still have more questions than answers though because a street fight will never go the way you plan because of the many variables, btw none of the guys in the mma section responded to my thread, is this because of disinterest or because they know something we don't about street fighting/have solved the riddle or are just so confident of their grappeling and striking skills that they don't spend time thinking about this stuff, btw I was in mma too. I'll rephrase the question so it doesn't sound like typical tma esoterical b.s. "What 5 of your mma skills would you use/train to use in a street fight?" Let's see if they like that one better.
