  • help for body punches

hey, my coach never fought amateur so hes not big on how it works, but from wat i saw there not alot backing into the corner and inside fighting, this would be younger amateur 15,16,17. I might be complelty wrong but in the end it doesnt make a difference . Any hints or tips for gettting inside and working the body, Im not sure there is a point for body punches when i only got 3, 2min rounds to fight in and body shots dont really come into effect until the later rounds right? well is there any hints or good combo's opening that are usually there? thanks

Well what i do is when i sparr i throw quite a few punches to the head which makes my opponent put his hands up to block, so then wen i have the chance i unload a couple of straights and hooks to the body. It sometimes wears them down so i try to use body punches wenever i can. And wen u catch someone with a punch and they are breathin in, they get winded, and thats wen you know ur opponents done for the day.

A couple good combo's involving the body? I'll keep it simple!

The jab to the chest is one of my favorite punches, and is also one of the most neglected and least expected punches, too! A quick flicking jab low, another high, then step in with a stiff jab to the chest. This will literally knock the wind out of your opponent, and if in the unlikely event that it isn't scored (very easy punch to see) you've staggered your opponent for a split second and can press the opening.

Also, Micky Ward style - left hook to the head, left hook to the body. The hook to the head shouldn't be hard. Don't throw your hips into the punch, but keep it hard enough to let him know it's there. Often, your opponent see's the punch and moves his hand up to block it high. Immediately drop low, pivot on your toes and ram a power left hook into his side (or liver if you can manage it). You'll be amazed at how many times this will work, especially if you make him want to believe your hook to the head - drop a few quick hooks upstairs without the follow up body shot so he'll think he knows you. If he does recognize what you're doing, he'll be anxious to drop his elbow to guard the body, which opens up his head for easy scoring and big shots.

      Good luck

i like to wait for people to come at my head with punches and combos, so i can duck under them and fire a hard punch or combo into their body. this works great because they are coming straight into your punches, making them even more devastating. another thing i do is wait for my opponent to come into me with a flurry, and either duck under it or parry what i can, or step to the side and then glue myself to his body and slam uppercuts into him as he comes into me. the taller your opponent, the better this will work. when im fighting taller guys, i dont even bother with their heads since their body is much easier for me to get to and i dont have to risk getting raped by the superior reach by staying on the outside.

also the advice about creating oppenings is good. you got to make your oppenent open himself, by throwing punches in his face and tricking him.

dont underestimate body shots. they can hurt like hell, and really slow down your opponent, if not drop him. many people are head hunters and try to get head shots only, but u are really missing many oppertunities by doing so. there are many targets in the body, like the ribs, floating rib, solar plexus, liver, and kidneys.
