"It's a fear that once you get over, you'll notice the quickest and biggest spurt of improvement in your game than probably any time during your "career"" - Bazookahead speaking on fear of getting hit.
century has a nice head gear for weapons. It has the face cage as well as a throat protector. I think that's kind nice. I found it in their 2004 christmas catalog. They still have it in stock though.
If you are looking for headgear limited to boxing then go with the Full Face version under training headgear on FightGear.Com. The face saver is good for a beginner or sparring partner but not for everyday use.
If you are looking to use them for all out self-defense scenarios then simply pick up an Itech Concept hockey mask and attach with pull ties. FightGear or TitleBoxing headgears bottomline are boxing approved so the technology withstands head trauma which is vital. The Itech mask provides excellent vision and protection against simulated eye gouging etc.
A motorcycle helmet is too heavy for everyday sessions especially if you chin jab. The above combo will run you $110 but well worth it. This is the only thing I use with my students for all out training!
...I actually...really...dislike headgear.
It makes it harder to slip, or bob and weave...it feels weird.....it just bothers me.
I prefer to spar, sans headgear, but with heavier gloves...i.e. 16oz.
For weapons work, and all the fun, "reality" based stuff...I've used the FIST gear...and it's good...but still very bulky and awkward.
I've seen the Tony Blauer SPEAR gear stuff...and they look pretty cool, and more mobile...but, I haven't tried them so I wouldn't know for sure.
You could always go balls to the wall with a fencing mask, knee pads, lacrosse gloves (or the coffee cup guard), shinguards, a cup, and lameco forearm protectors....like the DogBros....but...ouch.
Ummm, just a quick question, thought I'd post here rather than a new thread as some more of the peoples opinions I would take have already posted in here (brewer):
How tight is your headgear supposed to be... I just got mine, think its from Budoworld, and it feels like its giving me a headache if I wear it for like ten minutes (havent actually got to get hit with it yet, cant wait for that....).
Does it loosen up, or is it supposed to be reallly tight?
So tight to where you eyes feel they are going to pop out.
No, just kidding. You want to to where its tight enough you cant just move it around, you dont want it to move much when you get hit. Headaches are expected for some, they do take a little getting use to and the heat that will build up inside them during sparring does get to be a little much at times.
To address what Garland said about slipping, I put baby oil on my headgear when I spar to help reflect the miss sliped punchs.
It also depends on what type of headgear you have. For example a fullface boxing headgear has a chin rest. Hence, it wraps around the entire face so your chin has to sit snug. Others have chinstraps only. Some have adjustments on the top and others only on the rear. As TerryV pointed out, it should never move if you are hit.
I really believe that the foam density and layering technology(if applies) used in boxing approved headgear plays a significant role in minimizing headaches. ASIDE from being hit of course. Remember, most martial art headgear was made for controlled to limited contact while boxing is for full contact.
I cant claim to know exactly what this was made for, but its intended for full contact sparring , either using boxing gloves , or mma gloves.
The reason it threw me off was for mountain biking I bought a helmet (full face) that was too tight and I had to get a bigger one, didnt want something like this to happen again.
Its not full face sparring headgear but it does have a chin strap, two things on the back, and one on the top, I think I'll play with it, thanks for the tips.
