That's a pretty interesting fact, considering that Hugh Laurie is a Cambridge educated actor who comes from a well-to-do family in England.
I'm not in the acting business, but appearance matters, so Laurie probably protects himself at all times when he's sparring. In addition, you'd imagine that coming from high-class, high-brow upbringing that such a blue collar hobby would be frowned upon. Apparently, its not such a big issue and he probably enjoys the sport if what you say is true.
Laurie is not the only actor to take up the sport. The actress in Million Dollar Baby, Hillary Swank has also taken up boxing and in a t.v. interview talks about her training and sparring since she took up the role. She's hooked (no pun intended).
Thanks for sharing. Just goes to show boxing's rising acceptance in all socio-economic levels.

Rourke actually gave up acting around 1991 to pursue a boxing career for a while. Next thing you know he's in Sin City, so that should tell you how well he did.
