  • hook off the jab

what can i do to make my hook off the jab faster and more cloaked? any help would be much appreciated.

    (I'm Southpaw, if it matters)

I've used a fake cross after the jab, during the hook conversion - just pump the cross a little. Seems to help sometimes.

Also, I've used the hook as more of a swipe to set up the cross after the jab (jab, 'hook', cross).

generally, the hook can be improved by getting your lead hand just outside their cover before starting the jab...

Hope these ideas are useful, although I'm not much of a boxer.

Jab low (or fake a low jab) and then hook high as they drop their guard.

I feel you i have the same problem. It turn out that I connect with the jab-hook a lot more effectively than a jab jab, but the hook is weak and overextended. I think that to sink a good hook you have to close some serious distance with the jab, because the jab has much better range than the hook.

Step with each punch and you'll find that the jab and the hook will no longer feel over extended. Practice slow at first before starting to ramp it up.

Two type of hook off a jab:
One is a pressing attack, the jab is stiff meant to drive back the opponent or slightly off balance him with a step in hook attack to take advantage of the opponents momentarily off balance. It is a solid powerful assault.

The second can be more deceptive and most flow really smoothly. Best bet if you are having trouble with this is to work in slow motion jab as you retract the jab before it completes back to its guard position begin the motion of the hook make sure to use your hip and ball of the foot, dont leave behind the lower behind stuck to the ground. The body should move freely into and behind the hook. Now find the proper body mechanic for the hook so it feels natural for your body. Look in the mirror, check alignments. Go slow, move smoothly, take your time. Then slowly speed up when you feel you have everything moving smoothly and feeling natural.

Then you can move into the heavybag etc.

            hope that helps.
