  • A Few Amateur Boxing Questions

Amateur fights are more about points, and pro fights are more about knockouts right? Is it a bad idea to knock someone out in an amateur fight?

I was also wondering if any of you went easy on another fighter because you knew they didnt have a chance. I got in the ring with a kid once who didnt seem to be doing so well. I felt bad and took it easier on him because I didnt want to knock him out. Have any of you ever experienced this? What did you do?

The reason why I am asking all of this is because I am kind of afraid that my next opponent might not be up to my standards (I don't mean to sound arrogant if I do). If he isn't, then what do I do? Do I knock him out anyway, or do I take it easy on him? Any help would be much appreciated.

I would knock the person out. If u want to win give it your all n dont hold back, but if its a sparring match than u should hold back.

for pro and amateur, it all depends on how the fight presents itself. You may have to fight smart and rack up the points on a fight, but take advantage of a possible knockout.

But, I wouldn't take it easy on someone. But, if you know you got the fight won, and the other kid is defenatly hurt, it's your choice to take it easy on the person. I might be inclined to do the same thing. But, realise that, that person is there to kick your butt.

Sparring MMA standup, (related to boxing I suppose), I hit my opponenent with a right hand, then like 10 seconds later a jab, right body shot, right uppercut in a row.

He was kinda bent over, and still had his hands up, and I could have unloaded on his head (backed into a corner), but I didnt.

I just asked him if he was alright, he said, yeah, so I just backed up and let him regain his composure.

Several times after that I felt like saying "look man your just getting hurt do you want to stop" or things like that, (I was taking him down pretty much at will too).

But I didn't ... I figured it would be embarassing to him if I kept asking him if he wanted to quit because I was beating him so badly. If he needed to stop he could let me know.

With that said I did take it a bit easier on him because we were sparring, if it was a mma fight, I would have gone for the knees to the head while he was bent over, and if it was boxing I would have tried to finish him.

        All depends on the situation.

If it was me, i would give it my all no matter what situation, sparring is a different story, i feel pity for no one, and i hope i get treated the same way in the ring because we're two fighters. don't mean to seem arrogant, but to be honest thats what referrees are there for, to make sure everything is going smooth and to avoid having one fighter get seriously hurt, so other than a bruised ego on behalf of your opponent i dont see why you should not give it your all, remember the ref is there in case anything gets out of hand. hope this helps.

          -my two cents
