    hey everyone, ive been boxing for about a year and i was pretty good and for i while i havent been there because of water polo. Well, me and some friends were boxing in a parking lot the other night and when this kid came at me i freaked out, leaned back nad threw haymakers. my set was good as was my footwork and the punches i threw when i was just trying to get him to back up but i think im afraid to gtet hit now or something well I dunno can someone shed some light?

    I don't know if this helps, but I used to lean back a lot (for at least a year) until I was used to the proper defense. I'm not an expert, but I'd say the more defense drills you do, and the more you get in the ring and spar, the more comfortable you'll be boxing. I'm guessing that your leaning back is a result of a low comfort level.

    As for the haymakers, I don't know what to say. Once again, maybe a lack of comfort. It could also be that the rest of your punches aren't yet embedded into your muscle memory.

    I hope this helps. If it doesn't, then sorry.

      well this is due to the fear of getting punched(yeah i know,but wait theres more)..somehow implanted into you by
      A) getting your face busted so much that your brains try to hide when a punch is coming
      B)like twtguy said : low comfort level
      C) by smoking a big juicy blunt (im serious, if u did that would explain ur reaction very easily )

      now this is something ive been through..i used to close my eyes and move my head back everytime a punch was thrown at my face during sparring so i know how ur feeling.Haymakers (again like the guy above said) is due to the lack of training and exercice of your muscle memory.

      now here are the solutions;
      1) have ur buddy snap blows 2 inch infront of ur eyes and try as much as you can to keep ur eyes open (i know this sounds impossible since we were made instinctively to blink in sight of a threat.)But,with enough practice u'll be able to face the action..always keep ur guard up though,this is not a ''how to take a punch lesson''.

      2)why do you lean back? ..learn that you can bob £ weave,slip,roll and sidestep instead. if u dont go forward you need to go sideways thats my point...and if u feel like leaning back..lean ur whole body back not just ur face...step out calmly..and re-think ur strategy

      3)above all, keep cool..ur not gonna die fighting in a parking lot(shut up).Once u lose ur cool the fight is over..its all in your head,have confidence in your skills and victory will be yours.if u get in a fight thinking u'll get beat up u better re-evaluate.

      4)If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant(Art of War)-->Do not get mad..ever! getting mad will push you to make mistakes -->desperate punches..leave your emotions at the door when engaging in a fight.

      To quote Sun Tzu's Art of war If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him.
      fighting is a science,leave the haymakers to the inexperimented and use ur weapons smartly..and again..calmly.
