  • Never Done this Before

I bust the skin off my baby knuckle while hitting the heavy bag last night. I was wearing thin bag gloves. I have never broke skin and caused a callous on my baby knuckle before. Any thoughts?

I'll stick with the thin gloves, I like the knuckle conditioning. Thanks

Well call them "cupcakes". I've lost the skin off every knuckle on both hands. Comes from hitting a canvas bag without gloves. We NEVER used gloves as the point of the training was to learn to punch and land properly. After a while, if you weren't landing flush, the abrasive texture of the canvas bag showed you by taking the skin off of your knuckles. My teacher was really creative at finding ways to reinforce principles and concepts.

Soon, your hands would be on fire and your knuckles would be bleeding. It was a tan canvas bag, so it over time it turned red and brown from all the blood we had shed from hitting it incorrectly. Not only did it force us to punch with better accuracy, but it helped us to build up tougher skin on our knuckles. After training like that for months we weren't bleeding anymore. The "cupcakes" were gone and we were better punchers for it.

I don't mind when that happens on my two biggest knuckles. But it was a shocker because it happened on the baby knuckle. I like the hardness once the skin grows back over and over and over again.
