  • Boxing combos and Drills

Hey All I just started and I would like to know some boxing combos mine aren't really that effective. I need strong drill that will make me kinda like Ali. Also are there some drills that can help me duck, stick and move like Ali

Why do you want to be like Ali? Are you built like him, do you have the same physical attributes, size and speed that he had? Do you feel comfortable getting hit are you conditioned well enough that you could hang on the ropes like he did for round upon round and then be able to knock your opponents out towards the end of the fight? If you start boxing as an amature that's not going to work since fights are only three rounds. Every guy I know that starts boxing wants to be Ali or Joe Frazier or some other great boxer of the past. I know a guy who's 5'5 and weights 180 pounds and he's telling me he want's to box like Ali and Roy Jones Jr. combine. First of all if you're only 5'5 and weigh 180 pounds why the hell would you want to try and box like Ali that guy was well over six feet tall and he had a massive reach second at least Roy Jones Jr. is closer to his same weight but this guy is way to damn slow to ever be able to box the way Roy Jone Jr. does. I remeber another guy that game in the gym once and he kept dropping his left hand and keeping it down by his waist. In sparring every one started nailing the guy with the right hook and cross because he always had his left hand down. Then when my boxing coach told him to keep his hands up the guy says "but this is how Oscar De La Hoya does it I watched him he hold's his hands like this." Then my boxing coach said to the guy "yea that's right but you're not Oscar De La Hoya." The bottome line is the greastest boxers are good because they boxed the best way that suites their physical size, skills strenghts and weaknesses. You've got to start training first then figure out which parts of the game are you're strenghts and which parts of the game you have trouble with. Then you have to develop your self accordingly. AS you train you'll see where you are good and were you are not you'll figure out what you need to work on and what you have to do to develop YOUR BEST GAME.

Exactly I don't know what you're strong points and week points are and you may need to develop you're game further before you will know which type of boxing style suits you best. If you have some of the same physical characteristics as Ali, fast for your size and have a good jab and quick feet then Ali would be a great fighter for you to emulate. Look at you're physical attrubutes as well as the points of boxing you tend to excell in the most and develop your self as a fighter accordingly that's the best advice I could give you.

The main thing if you're trying to be like Ali is you've got to study his fights. Ali fought two different ways when he first launched on to the pro scene and when he knocked out Sonny Liston Ali was strong and extremely fast for his size, he could dance and his foot work was great. If you want to fight like that study those fights watch his foot work and watch any footage you can find of him training. But the key to all of Ali's early success was in his foot work and his timing. Then after Ali came back from his two year retirement he found he wasn't nearly as fast as he was before and he had to change his style. He start playing the rope a dope he used it to beat Foremen and he used it against Frazier. He conditioned really hard and would make his opponents fight really hard and knock them out or hurt them in the later rounds. He still had extremely fast hands and he could still dance but not the way he used to his fighting style changed dramatically. If you want to fight this way you need to learn how to absorb punishment take a hit and keep your self protected against the ropes.

Joe Frazier is an awsome boxer to study he's very short for a heavy weight most of the guys he fought were lot taller than him and had a huge reach advantage. To make up for his height Frazier would exagerate his head movement. Frazier always kept his head moveing keeping him self off line and making it difficult for his opponents to hit him. Head movement is one of the keys to successful boxing by constantly moving your head you don't provide your opponents with a consitant target to aim at. Frazier's game was to move his head and try to slip, bob or weave to close the distance between him and his opponent and get inside. By doing this he was able to take away the reach advantage. Once Frazier was inside he'd go the body as soon as his opponent would drop the hands to defend the body he would throw hook to the head. Fraziers hook was one of his most powerful punches both to the head and to the body. Once Frazier was inside on a fighter with longer reach the only punch the guy could throw was a short upper cut as soon as any one tried to upper cut Frazier he would throw a hook to the guys head on the side as the guy was uppercutting this is because Frazier knew as soon as the guy dropped his hand for the upper cut his head would be open for the hook. If you watch Ali vs Frazier when Frazier beats Ali, Frazier almost knocks Ali out with the hook to the head it was amazing that Ali stood on his feet for the remainedr of the round after that punch because he was staggered all over the ring but still Ali proved to have and extremely strong chin as Frazier brought it all to him. Ali Frazier III is a good one to watch although Frazier loses you can see how he would work the body of Ali espacally when he would try to play the rope a dope game with him. Again in that fight it is amazing how much punishment both fighters take.

well, I really don't care if you're getting burnt out on me Crazyjoe just like you don't care about anything but being a smart ass.

People ask for other opinions for all sorts of reasons, some of which you may not think of as valid but it's not up to you or anyone else to question the validity of a person's desire to learn, if you really wanted to help you would give something back other than simple criticisim.

Like I've said before, it's tough for me to pass on an opportunity to let you know what a downer you are when I see do crapping on peoples good intentions. Maybe you have good intentions and they're clouded by your negativity but I just don't see it.

                        Combo's to start with...

Here are some combinations you can start to drill...

Always remember that the jab is the single, most effective punch in boxing. A good boxer can essentially win the fight with his jab alone.
