  • Sparring

I've been going to the Golden Gloves for a while now and I spar with other boxers my size. A cousin of mine invites me to spar with "them" but he outweighs me by about 50 lbs. When I go in there its just a matter of survival because he has more experience than me and my punch isn't as heavy as his. Should I stay sparring with him?

I would. He's bigger and more expereinced than you, so that means you're gonna have to find a way to beat him. I think this will help you make needed adjustments that are key in boxing.

I agree you will learn to make adjustments. I would get whatever time in the ring you can but be aware that if this is the only way you spar, it will likely contribute to the development of the way you fight. I was always the smaller and lighter fighter where I came up. So it's no surprise that now, 15 years later, I do best when I fight inside since most people that I am up against haven't had the amount of time I've had in that zone. For me and maybe for you, it where you're fight has to be. It can be a good and very effective place to hurt your opponent.

I would suggest the next time you spar with him or better yet, watch him spar with someone else. Look for opening he leaves that will help you get in with an uppercut or body shot-like a right hook to the body under his jab.

      have fun
