when i spar, i always seem to get struck with a right hook as soon as i launch anything. any tips on (a) how to avoid this situation and (b) how to defend it if it's too late?

Your right or his right?
Unless you just plain suck, or he just plain outclasses you - you are being set up for the punch, and falling for it. Also, if it is his right, and he is in a orthodox stance, it could be the simple fact that you arent paying enough attention (monitoring) his rear hand. Also, if you know he is going to throw the right hook in response to what your doing, then you should be takeing advantage of that knowledge........
There was another thread on this forum (i think) with this exact question not even a month ago.

a) move! pay attention to his combos and other trends.
b) move! footwork, bob and weave, duck, cover, check, parry, intercept. Many ways to 'counter' a hook, rear or otherwise. Best thing is to not be there when his fist gets there, or to be punching him rather then being the one being punched.
