  • How to do what you think.

One thing I've noticed when I spar, and when I talk to some of my friends who box untrained, is that its nothing like you expect or envision. Now I am reading about it and learning as much as possible, so that gives me an advantage. But I think it will take time for the knowledge to matter. Because when I sparred with my neighbors recently I threw a bunch of right hooks. And I was just like what am I doing? Its just instinctual. What I want to know is how do you, or how long does it take, before you started to do what you learned when you actually fought, rather then to fall back on instinct?

I know what you mean. I've been boxing for quite a while now, and I have seen a lot of what you are talking about when I watch people spar.

My advice, is too try and stay relaxed, try to keep in mind everything that you know and what you've read about to do in the ring, and about proper technique. Also, incorporate everything that you've been reading about and what you want to get good at into your training. Do it when you hit the bags, do it when you hit the focus mitts with your coach, and be sure to do it when you're shadowboxing. Imagine your opponent in front of you and try to keep everything under control. Slow everything down a bit at first and make sure that all of your punches are thrown correctly, that you stance is correct, etc.
If you do all of this and really focus on what you want to accomplish, good technique and control will eventually come and replace what you do now as your instinct. Depending on how hard you train, how much you train, and if your training is quality (not just going through the motions of hitting the bag, etc.), you will get better. Trust me.
I really can't say how long it will take. It depends on the person.

Bruce Lee once explained that in the beginning, a punch is just a punch, and a kick is just a kick. Then, once you learn proper technique, and everything that you have to do to punch and fight correctly; a punch becomes so much more. But once you’ve mastered it, it returns to being just a punch, because it becomes natural.

    I hope that helped.
